Lauren and I sat at the table in the bungalow, feeding the twins their lunch. The toddlers giggled and chattered excitedly as they dug into their gourmet mac and cheese, the chef having graciously accommodated Thomas's request.


“Try one of the strawberries Amelia, they are my very favorite,” Lauren said, handing her the ripe berry.


“Really, Lauren? They are my favorite too,” Amelia beamed as she took a bite.


“You are really good with them,” I said, smiling. “They both talk about you all the time.”


“That means so much to me,” Lauren said, light filling her eyes. “I really enjoy being around them. It makes me feel like I am part of the family.”


“You are part of the family,” I said, feeling slightly guilty about not reaching out to her sooner. “You always have a place here with us.”


Lauren smiled softly, shifting her eyes to the plate in front of her. I could have sworn I saw a stray tear, but Lauren quickly whipped it away, before changing the subject.
