Chapter 18

Police caught the first addict in S Town.

He was to be sent to C City for further investigations, but as expected, he didn't make it. The drug had potential to kill it's victim within 3 to 10 times of consumption, and yet there were so many caught up in this suicide scheme? Was the few hours of euphoria, truly worth waving goodbye to the world? Perhaps to some people.

'This isn't good, MinYao's name is sure to get tarnished this way.' Chen Dulan thought as he watched more officers be assigned to S Town's station. Yao Jianguo would be disappointed in him.

"Chen Dulan," Yao Fang's voice distracted him from his thoughts. They were currently on the rooftop, where Yao Fang had found him. "Are you selling drugs in this town?"

"MinYao isn't involved in this, neither am I." He confirmed.

"I thought so." He sighed. "So, what's stopping you from catching this bastard?"

"I don't have connections, and they wouldn't let me in bars." Chen Dulan argued.

"That's obvious. With your face, you look like someone sent by the police undercover, it's like you're not even interested in the drug. Why'd they tell you?" The Young Master thoughtfully said and waited for a while. "Do you need access somewhere?"

"The bar two blocks away from the karaoke, I am sure they are selling the drug in there today. I tried to sneak in, but it's in the basement and I cannot afford a commotion."

"Say... what will you do once you get inside?"

"The simplest method would be to kill him." Yao Fang shifted uncomfortably at the casual mention of killing. "But it's better to not cause a murder commotion here. Madam Yao lives here after all, she'd get angry with me and kick me out."

"Chen Dulan you think my mother is some tyrant!?"

"No, Young Master. She is a respected and genius woman, but mostly, she loves peace. If I cause commotion here, she wouldn't let me off easily. That is the only reason she chooses to live away from MinYao, in the outskirts."

"Fine... but if you won't kill the dealer, what would you do?"

"Tie him up and throw him in the police station."

"And what about the drug circulation?"

"Let the police handle it. I only need to make it known that he isn't a part of MinYao."

That made sense. Yao Fang noticed how Chen Dulan had no sense of morals, not that he was a fan of justice himself, but some things repulsed him. He needed to get used to the fact that, cruelty was no big deal to MinYao.

"Young Master should remember, we are not police. We are not the government. We only interfere where it starts to threaten us, or our base as a whole." He waited for a moment and then continued. "For an example, if there is a serial killer in C City murdering women, it has nothing to do with us. But if there is a terrorist attack or something major that affects us too, MinYao would shut it down. We don't care for citizens, we only care for the group's name and survival in the longer run."

"Can MinYao shut down a terrorist attack? Isn't that too big of a task?"

"Without abiding law and ethics, many complicated tasks become easy. People need answers from the government, but they can't complain with mafia's methods." Chen Dulan pointed out. "Sometimes even officials beg us to interfere, because it's much easier to illegally stop some unnecessary mayhem. That's a big source of income."

Chen Dulan was knowledgeable in this aspect, and was probably high up in the hierarchy at MinYao. Yao Fang would have to catch up.

"You're diverting from the topic. You still haven't thought about this drug case."

"Young Master seems awfully interested in this case. Perhaps you'd like to help out?" There was a small curve of excitement on the corner of his lips, even if this was the second time, Yao Fang gasped to see Chen Dulan smile. Why was he so much affected by a man's smile? "I won't kill anyone in this case, your help would be appreciated to get access. And it would be nice experience."

Yao Fang made a troubled face. "My brother keeps trying to keep me away though."

"Right, if you tell your brother or your mother that I made such an offer, you should assume me dead tomorrow. So all this needs to happen in secrecy."

"We both have exams in a month, and you're to fail for sure."

"That exam is useful to any other student, considering it would affect their chances of getting into college and what not. Useless to MinYao's Young Master.

What do you say?"
