He didn’t answer her question. All he did was stare at her, acting mute.

“Why do I feel like you don’t care about my feelings?” Abigail asked. “Don’t you love me?”

His silence was the clear answer.

Christopher carried her into the bathroom, took a bath with her, and brought her to bed.

They were lying side by side, hugging each other, not bothering to go down and eat.

Abigail was drowsy. His rhythmic heartbeat was like a lullaby. Moreover, his warm embrace made her feel comfortable and safe. How was she able to stay awake?

In contrast, Christopher was motionless and absorbed in his thoughts about Abigail's mother. He was unable to secure a job for her at any of the Shermans' other hotels.

His father had dealt with her so ruthlessly that she couldn't even step onto any of their properties, let alone find work there.
