It snowballed for educators to be accused of not being able to provide a proper education for their children, referring to their own cultures.

However, the current wave of book bans in the US appears to be more politicized than in the past, because it pits the two major US political parties – Republican and Democrat – against each other in an already deeply polarized political landscape.

"He's turned into Republicans who largely support conservative, white, religious or evangelical parents," explains Hartman.

"And oftentimes, Republican politicians are downright opportunistic in getting support for themselves, for their candidacies ... because those are issues that animate their base."

The current backlash against books and curricula has turned into a national battle. There were rallies and protests from Virginia to California, with conservative groups taking on school boards and education officials.
