We finished up the late shift of the diner, and the guys left. I told them I would clean up. While cleaning up, Paige came inside.

/"Low man on the totem pole, huh?/"

/"Well, we all must be something, don’t we?/" I smirked.

She rolled her eyes. /"I’ll help you. Then we can get out of here./" She kissed me before heading to the back.

I finished busing the tables as the bell chimed.

/"Sorry, buddy. We’re closed./" I loaded dishes into a container.

I looked up to see two guys in masks pointing guns at me.

Ae pain seared through my leg as I screamed and dropped to the floor. They heard a commotion from the back and took off.

/"Oh, God! Mack!/" She ran over to me.

I tried to stop the blood. Then everything went black.
