#Chapter21

VEGAS

Almost twelve years ago

/"Don’t go, Daddy./"

/"Vegas, I’ll be back in less than a week. Home in plenty of time for your ninth birthday./" Dad circled his long russet arms around my thin frame. I squeezed him tighter. I didn’t want him to leave. Bad things happened when he left.

/"Now, come on. Be a good girl and let me go./"

I resisted... until my step-mother, Tonya, pinched me, making a tsk-sound behind her teeth. I jumped back, rubbing my upper arm. Following the direction of Tonya’s narrowed light-brown eyes, I saw the sketch of wrinkles around my Daddy’s belt line. Wrinkles I had caused.

Tonya was in charge of my father’s appearance, from packing his clothes for every trip to the cleaning of his uniforms when he was back home.

And I’d ruined her hard work.
