Fried Fish

Violet's POV

"Watch out the pole is moving!" I yell to Jee

I see him grab the pole but does not know what to do next.

"Let me show you and then after you can do the rest I promise." I say to him apologetically

"Fine just this once but I will do the rest next time." he says and sits and watches me

"Perfect!" I say back and get ready to reel in the fish

I hold the pole and grip the vine and jerk it back. I start to rope the vine around the pole and in comes the fish splashing everything everywhere. What is this? The fish here has spikes all over it! No wonder they don't like eating this. They must not know how to eat the fish since they are so spiky. I use the vine to take the fish closer to the basket. Jee grabs it from me and places the vine and fish into the basket. He adds another coconut piece and throws the line back in.

"I will do the rest. What do you need me to do next." he says back to me

I need to teach him fire and maybe some type of oil. Ah coconut oil will do.

"Can you grab some sticks for wood and maybe 20 rocks. I need maybe 10 more of those coconuts too." I ask him and instantly he leaves to go get them

Right now it won't be the best oil but for now something that can add taste. I grab some of the cut coconut and scrape the flesh with a small rock I washed. I grind the coconut flesh until it's a liquid. This will have to do for frying. Next I use the coconut shell as a bowl. I need to test this to see if it will burn.

"What are you making now?" he asks me and places all the items I need on the ground

"This is to add flavor and this is to hold our food. But I need to build a fire so that I can cook this." I say back happily. Fried fish today!

"I'll cook it you tell me how." he says back to me upset

"How about I show you and then you can next time. But know this, I love cooking so I am happy to cook this for you." I say back to him

There he goes blushing again. I start to get the pieces of twigs and wood and place them like a tepee formation and then flatten them on the ground. I place the rocks around it so that the fire doesn't spread. This will do. Now I start the fire with rock sparks and light the twigs first which then goes down towards the bigger wood pieces.

"Stay back! You will die. How and why would you start to make little suns?" he asks scared and worried

"This is what I use to cook. You guys don't?" I ask him

"Never would we do that. Many have lost their lives to the sun goddess and when she gets angry she will burn anyone who gets in her way. Unfortunately I have seen this with my own eyes." he says sadly

"Have you? I am so sorry that you experienced something like that. But the way I do it you can maintain the fire and it won't spread. Please listen to me." I say back to him with doggy eyes

"I will stay next to you and help you so that you don't get hurt." he says and watches me

I finish making the fire and he watches everything I do. I used a few other sticks and then placed them above the fire so that we could fry the fish. First I get the coconut and put it in the flames to see if they burn. I am lucky they don't. We can definitely use these in so many ways. I look and see the pole moving again.

"Look, look at the pole!" I yell at Jee

He jumps up and grabs the pole and reels in another fish. He rebates the pole and throws it back in.

"I need something sharp to cut. Maybe a sharp rock?" I ask him

"I can find one for you. We have a yard where we throw away the bones every once in a while when we see animals devoured. We can't keep them near us as they attract little beasts and insects. The stench is bad so we move it somewhere else. Later I will take you there and we can find a few bones that are sharp or teeth." he says back smiling

He flies up and checks for any sharp rocks next to us. So how am I gonna cook this spiky fish? It looks like a normal fish but it's definitely spiky. Oh, maybe I can make a brush out of it! It's small enough and I just need to dull the spikes a little more so it's not too dangerous. I doubt they have brushes here. I see the pole start to move again and I walk towards it. Jee drops down before me and takes the pole away and reels and rebates it.

"I told you I would do it. You don't have to." he says apologetically

"Jee. I know you don't want me to do things on my own but little stuff like this I can do it. I'm not some lazy female who can't do anything for herself." I say back to him stubbornly

He looks at me surprised and settles down next to me

"I am sorry. Most of the time females don't do what you are doing so I am trying to be as helpful as possible for you. Forgive me?" he says back to me so sincerely

"How can I not!" I say to him and give him a big hug. Oh this feels so comforting. Makes me miss home.

Home? Will I ever be able to go back there? I can see that he saw my sad expression and he moves close and snuggles his head into my neck.

"Are you okay?" he asks

"Yes, don't worry. I am happy to be here now. Let's cook! Can you bring the fish out and take the spikes off" I say back to him happily

He grabs a fish and uses a rock to purge it. He attacks the fish like his life is on the line. Geez, he chopped it instead of taking the spikes off.

"Like this?" he asks

"I will do it this time and you can do it next." I said to him awkwardly. We won't have any fish meat if he does this next time.

I slowly use the rock to cut off the spikes off the fish. It's actually pretty easy. I can pull them off with no problem. I wonder why they never tried to just pull them off. He starts to check the pole and reel another fish in and rebates. Then he grabs the rest of the fish and starts to take the spikes off of them. Funny thing is these beastman have legs but when they fly it turns into claws like real birds. They also have wings when they fly but when they don't have wings they have hands. So they're like half beast half human?

I take the coconut husk and add the coconut oil version I made into the husk on the fire. I chop the fish that wasn't destroyed and place them into the husk. Naturally within minutes the fish starts to cook and it smells amazing. A few minutes later they are charred and I use a stick to grab a piece out.

"Open your mouth." I say to him to give a piece of fish to him

He obediently opens his mouth and I place the fried fish into his mouth. His eyes start to sparkle as if this was the best thing he has ever eaten

"This is the best fish I have ever eaten! You are so amazing. I would never think to use fish like this and with mini suns it cooks so well. We eat everything raw so doing this changes everything!" he says excitingly

"I am glad you like it. Wait until you try doing this method with fruits!" I say back to him

"You can do this with fruits too? I can't wait he says smiling while I feed him the rest of the fish

Mission accomplished!
