When his younger sister is propositioned by the Tyrant King, Aster steps in to take her place. “Flowers like the rose are needed for so many reasons,” Aster said. “The ground needs their roots, bees need their pollen, and animals need their leaves. So they do what they can to survive, by any means necessary. Does that mean a rose is evil for growing thorns?” He looked up at Rowan.

Rowan kept his eyes on the rose. He didn’t seem convinced. “A single rose has never caused as much pain as I have, Aster.”

He had to hand it to his Starboy, he did a pretty good job handling his shock, considering the violence he’d just committed. 


Jace had been expecting to be the one to kill the King himself, if he was being honest. He thought Aster was going to key him up, disable him, but not deal the final blow. And the shock that took hold of him afterward was completely understandable—Jaceron himself had suffered similar shock the first few times he’d taken a life, even if the lives he took as a young warrior were the lives of the Usurper’s lackeys. 


Jace had busied himself as Aster’s shock set in, setting up the room to fit their lie. He smashed out a window pane, big enough for a person to slip out of. He helped Aster strip out of his dress, to leave it on the floor and hopefully explain the blood splashed all over it.
