Chapter 46: Sparks Fly

The next few days were a blur for Aster.

Jace kept him from all the hectic chaos. Jasline handled all of the funeral affairs like a well-seasoned leader. There was still no word from outside the city—not about how the Everglory was doing, nor anything from his mother. It was like waiting for a comet that could end the world; they could see it, burning in the sky, hurtling toward them. But nothing could be done until the calamity reached them.

He couldn’t sleep well those three nights, and often ventured out onto the balcony of the guest room he was sleeping in (as he couldn’t stand to be in his own designated room just yet). He spent hours upon hours just staring out at the lights of the city and the darkness beyond. He wasn’t sure what to think or feel. All the questions he could possibly ask, he’d asked himself before, and he still had no answers.
