Chapter 25: The Duel, Part I

Outside, the night was still and quiet. Not even a gentle breeze caused the branches to creak or the ice upon them to clink like wind chimes. Thane followed the route he’d taken earlier in the week toward the meeting site, flinching a little every time his footsteps crunched in the snow.

He’d been walking half an hour when he first heard it.

The sound of hushed voices speaking to one another. A few minutes later he spotted light through the dense forest, encompassing a large area. As he drew closer, Thane could now see dozens of lanterns strung about, both on poles and hanging from trees, illuminating the glade he’d met with the Baroness in.

Except now the glade had tripled in size, the trees that once occupied the area had either been moved or removed, he didn’t know which. Finely crafted wood and iron seating were placed in a circle around the cleared grounds with one opening in which the audience and duelists could walk through.
