Chapter 33: Hidden in the Vatican
Shamefacedly, Elouise did make her way back to me after I called to her.
But I could tell that things weren’t the same between them.
“Look, I’m sorry I snapped at you. But remember… you’re my only hope. I’m counting on you to make this day especially memorable for me. Trust me. I’ve made some huge mistakes in the past, but I really don’t intend to sabotage our friendship in any way. Please… I can’t lose you.”
Her eyes aglow in the midst of the deep darkness, Elouise could see me almost perfectly, in spite of all the lack of light. Over time, she had grown accustomed to such things, and had even developed an affinity for night vision, likely by way of the magic she didn’t even know she had.
“You can’t go in there now,” Elouise whispered softly. “Or you could, but… it wouldn’t be very pleasant.”
“And why ever not?” Pushing my hair back with my hands, I shivered frightfully, not realizing how cold it was until then.
