The Gruesome Game

Felicity murmured a quiet thanks, and the ladies helped her up to her feet. Felicity was gaining feeling in her legs, and she stretched her limbs with a slight groan.

They led her to the large group gathering around a circular building made out of smooth stone. The grey was a stark contrast amongst the lush green and bright sand.

This time the personnel wasn't wearing masks. The front man had a regal face with a sharp groomed beard. He had an intimidating air, and he knew it, using it to his advantage. He held a clipboard, and he slapped the board on his thigh. "Alright. The last two are coming in later. Let's get started then.

"Call me, Obrien. I will be the leader of your unit today. Let's start roll call, shall we?"

The rowdy crowd quieted down when Obrien harshly started shouting names. But Felicity could barely hear anything coming out of Obrien's mouth anyways because she was in the back.

"Leah Erikson?" Obrien called.

The girl to Felicity's right nodded. "Here."

"Melissa Mendes?"

The short Latina girl with a bob and bright green eyes raised her hand. "Here!"

"Felicity Clarke?"

Felicity raised her hand as well. "Here."

A couple of minutes later, he said that there were one hundred and twenty-five people who were called. Obrien crossed his arms, and his band of the black-clothed group came around him. He looked excited, and it put Felicity on edge.

"There is a pile of crates inside the building walls. Grab your starter. There we will test your affinity," Obrien said.

"What are we doing?" the hushed whispers made it to Obrien's ears.

He angrily slammed the clipboard down on the ground making some of the people upfront jump. "Listen up! I won't say it again. If you get injured here or die, it is not my problem. Grab a starter and find a rune. That is your way out."

"What is this?!" someone next to her yelled.

"What is affinity?" another exclaimed.

Obrien pinched his nose bridge. "Affinity is your compatibility with a certain metal. You'll see when you go inside," Obrien muttered. "The doors will open in three… two… one…"

One of the personnel pulled his gun into the air and shot into the sky making everyone scream. Felicity got pushed forward a couple of feet from some people falling on the ground and others running off in the other direction in fear.

The doors of the stone circular building were slowly pulling open automatically, and the people in front made a run for it. People were shoving, and many got trampled upon.

"Go!" Obrien yelled.

Felicity's body was on autopilot, and she sprinted to the opening following the others. There was a huge arch above the circle structure when she made her way inside.

The large boxes seen in the middle. The crates were piled up in a pyramidal structure, and the brown crates contain a variety of weights judging by the fact that some people couldn't even open the boxes.

She picked up a brown crate at the bottom, and Felicity immediately dropped it from the smell. It smelled like fermented eggs and socks. She covered her nose and climbed her way to the top. Her eyes settled on a smaller one on the top tier. Felicity stubbed her toe on one of the nails sticking out, and she cringed from the pain.

Leah was right behind her, and she helped pushed Felicity up. "Hurry, hurry! There are people at the bottom getting violent!"

Felicity glanced down to see people's heads getting bashed, and her heart plummeted. It was already a death sentence from the get-go? Sweat glided down her neck, and she reached to grab the crate that was dangerously teetering off to the side that was in her face. She was just about to grab it when another hand reached for it.

Their hands collided, and the strength contest commenced. Felicity tugged the crate harder to try and get it out of the boy's hands. There were so many crates, why couldn't have he just grabbed a different one? The boy finally released the box which caused Felicity to lurch back with the crate hitting her in the lip.

However, the boy had reached the edge and was about to fall. They were about fifteen feet up in the air from the huge pile of boxes which only barely described the massive size of the dome and the crates.

Horror flashed through his eyes, one of his legs free above the air. Felicity felt dread fall into her stomach, and she leaned over to try and grasp his arm, but the boy lost his balance. She heard the crack as he hit the floor, and she tried hard to not dry heave.

Leah's hand came down on Felicity's shoulder as she yelled furiously, "We have to leave now before it's too late!"

Felicity frantically clutched the crate to her chest, as they made their way down, jumping over the cracked and broken boxes. Carefully taking the safest route down the pyramid, they tried to not get cut from the sharp edges.

Unlike some others, who have broken their legs and arms coming down from the tall pile of crates. It was a gruesome mess, and Felicity followed behind Leah closely.
