The crashing waves were stronger here by the shore where she emerged from the thick greenery. Foamy water reached the tip of her tall boots, and Felicity scoured the beach for any sign of the rune. She had no idea what it was supposed to look like. It could be anything.
The sun was about to set any second now, and she covered her eyes from the swaying wind making her hair swirl around her head haywire. She stretched her hand out toward the sky. Time was soon running out. Without light, it would be even harder to find the rune since some didn't have flashlights like her.
Leo had a bag on the other hand which was lying further into the dome where the crates were. She flipped her hair over her shoulder and huffed out an irritated breath. It was turning too much into a dog chase.
Red and pink across the sky was a very narrow line compared to the dark purple that was the original backdrop to the stars. It was pretty, but she wouldn't get anything done here along the shore with the darkness taking over. The rune likely wasn't here. If anything, it would at least be hidden somewhere more intricate.
There was a soft hum coming from the water, but it wasn't enough to raise any alarm. Her sword on her back was vibrating though, and the sensation seemed to be somewhat of a warning. She clenched her grip on the hilt of the blade and looked over the crashing ocean. It was a soft reminder that nothing was ever going to be normal again.
The ocean with the sunset backdrop reminded her of the psychological test that she took which sent chills down her spine. Felicity closed her eyes to try and close out of those pressing images. It was blurry, but it still weighed heavily in her mind.
Turning back, she walked north up back into the dense forest. Going deeper into the island was a better decision than being bait on the shore. There were goosebumps along her arms now, the temperature cooling down dramatically. She slapped a mosquito lingering around her neck and cringed. She had to find the guy from earlier quickly before she was alone on the island with no help.
The forest was damp, and the moisture from the air made the heat trap in her skin. The cooling wind made the perspiration on her skin grow cold at the same time leaving a sticky residue that was calling for mosquitos. It was a recipe for sickness if she wasn't careful.
Felicity sighed since she was still recovering from whatever fever she got from the changes in the environment. Her head still felt warm. She glanced up and took in her surroundings to see how the trees completely covered the sky, but in some patches, the moonlight was able to shine through. In those patches, little flowers that glowed softly grew. The flowers reminded her of moon flowers except these were a lovely dark purple.
Felicity stepped over an overly large fern, and suddenly heard a crunch of leaves to her right. She froze. The only thing that she could hear was her pounding heartbeat and shallow breaths. Reaching behind her, Felicity grabbed the hilt of the sword.
She could barely make out three feet in front of her, and she slowly shuffled through. There was a chance that wild animals were trying to make her their meal. She was bait either way. A large body moved, and Felicity screamed, bringing her sword down.
Metal crashed into metal, the clang ringing through the forest and making the creatures around them scamper off. The force of the sword colliding with another object made Felicity lose her balance and crash into the tree. The trunk and bark sharply scrapped her back, and she was about to call for help when something came over her mouth. She instantly bit the hand, and there was a muffled curse before the person pushed her away.
"It's Leo. Calm down." His harsh breath was above her, and Felicity tried to calm her nerves. She lifted her eyes to his, and he put a finger to his lips.
"Don't scare me like that," she hissed.
He pressed a hand over her mouth once more since she was talking too loud. "There is something on the island."
Felicity clenched her teeth and tried to swallow the fear. "They are close? Aren't they?"
She felt him nod, and Felicity tightened her grip on her sword. The sword was a shimmery purple color, and she couldn't remember when it changed from the original dull color. Maybe the moonlight was playing a trick on her eyes. Felicity ran her eyes down Leo's sword, which was black that was also so blue. A midnight color.
"They aren't human..." he whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"I caught a glimpse of one earlier though I couldn't really make out the form. It is not an animal."
Felicity's brows came together. "Then what is it?"
"I don't know. But, I found a boat earlier that was stuck under some rocks. I need some help to pull it out so that we can leave and search elsewhere."
"What happened to your boat?"
"The currents around here are stronger than normal. It drifted away since I didn't have any rope to tie the boat to. I couldn't get it onto land since I needed to push against the waters."
"But the rune..."
"I don't think the rune is on his island," Leo said.
"Do you even know what the rune looks like? I don't remember Obrien describing it."
"I think he said it was blue?"
They quickly made their way out of the forest, and Leo led Felicity to the high rocks. There was a ledge that stretched out above the water, and beneath it were jagged stones of slate. The waves were violently crashing onto the rocks, sending some water flying. Felicity pulled herself back from the edge of the cliff and turned to look at Leo expectantly.
The hum on her sword was getting stronger, and Felicity shifted her weight to try and relieve the stress on her back. It was faint before, but now it was getting too much. Felicity eased the sword from her back and leaned on it instead.
Leo pushed the hair up from his forehead and pointed to the right. "The boat is down there. It is wedged between those rocks."
The boat luckily wasn't near the hostile water, but it still wasn't necessarily calm either. It would be a challenge to get it out without damaging the boat. But wouldn't matter. They needed to get off of the island. They also couldn't turn back and go through the forest either since there was the chance of meeting with the creatures.
Felicity pursed her lips. They had to think of something fast. The time limit was quickly ticking down. She was about to voice an idea when Leo froze. Felicity whipped her head up, only to be pushed down by a huge gust of wind. She tried to lift her head and struggled to get the sword unstrapped from her side.
"Leo!" There was no answer.
Felicity stood up with as much strength as she could muster. It felt like her skin was tearing, and the whole area around them was a misty fog. She was going in blind. Gritting her teeth, her sword was buzzing in her hand as began to she cut through the air.
