CHAPTER 50

  “I think we should talk about this because it’s about today… it’s about everything between us. Don’t you get tired of it? The constant push and pull between us…. I do, and I’m exhausted…. Shouldn’t we try to talk about whatever this is out, so we can stop fighting? I am tired of arguing with you, making me feel shitty all the time…. You told me you would try. So talk to me… explain why we keep going around in circles and always end up mad at each other.”

  I sound as desperate as I feel, and he seems to hear it clearly. Reminding him of what he said the night he fell in here drunk. I know he hasn’t forgotten, but he hasn’t acted like he meant it.

  Dane sighs heavily, drops his face into his hands again with a slouch back down, rubs his eyes first, and then messes with his hair before sitting up slightly but not getting off his perched elbows. I can sense his need to get up and leave, but something is holding him rooted to the spot, and he taps one foot in agitation.
