Chapter 12 Maka

It's been a week since I last saw Maka, and my thirst grew. It was worst than detoxing. We have moved our things to the old lady. She never spoke much. Jia had started referring to her as Ma. It never took Jia too long to settle in.

My room had a fresh coating of white, and I had a single bed and a table. Abit neater than my room, there was a freshly varnished brown closet. I was surprised at how much had been done, and what was it about this lady? She seemed to have gotten abit younger. She no longer wore a scarf.

Her nails were neatly cut. For the first time seeing her hair, I noticed she had no grey hair. Maybe she never had grey hair, and she lost a few pounds. She no longer needed the walking stick. She could walk up straight.

Jia had also noticed alot of strange things had been happening this week. Jia was more talkative and looked slightly more mature. She looked like she was ten years old.

I heard a knock on my door as I stood up opening the door. It was Jia; could she hear my thoughts? "Are you staying wholeday in the room she questioned me?"

Sounding like mom, I thought. "Jia, is there somewhere you want to go?"

"Yes, out to the park, then sitting here wholeday."

"By the way, what is the old lady's name?" I asked Jia.

She frowned, then thought for a while before saying, "Maria."

I stood up from my bed and had been checking my phone for days now, hoping Maka would text me. Still nothing. Jia was dressed in bright colors today, a yellow dress with sunflowers. "So, little one, what do you want to do at the park?" I smiled.

She shrugged, "nothing."

I felt a sharp sting in my chest. I lifted my top and saw the yellow stone glowing brighter.

Jia looked up and tightened her grip. My lips felt dry, and I felt more thirsty than before. My head started feeling light.

I felt as if I was about to faint. Jia could see something was wrong and told me to sit down. My heart felt like it was beating slower, I felt difficulty breathing, and my eyes hurt badly as I felt a sharp pain shooting through my head. It had started to feel like I was choking.

I gripped it and crawled over to the mirror, I tried screaming for help, but the words couldn't come out. It became darker, and at this moment, I fell flat to the ground.

Opening my eyes, I saw a pool of blood. As I crawled towards it thinking its a puddle, I pushed my head down into it, and I felt a sharp pain as I hit my head on the concrete ground. Tears rolled down my cheek.

My mom stood there in her yellow work clothes, and her skin glowed. She looked more beautiful than I had ever seen her.

She stood there, not moving, "mom?" I screamed with no words coming out.

I crawled and bumped into the standing mirror, which fell on top of me, shattering into pieces. I felt a sharp glass in the center of my back, unbearable pain as I screamed, but nothing came out except complete silence.

My mom stretched her arm to me, but I could no more. I tried but just couldn't. I bent my head, and when I felt a cold hand touch the back of my neck, tilting my head to the side, my vision blurred. I could barely see the old lady. As I looked up, what was happening to me? I thought.

There was this sudden flash of Maka. She was lying in a tunnel tied up. I saw a man with army pants and boots wearing a black mask walking up to her.

"You don't touch her," I said, "you don't touch her."

My heartbeat was becoming slower.

The cold hand lifted me by the cheek and stuck the straw into a vile of blood. I was too weak to ask questions and say anything; the first drop of blood on my lips felt soothingly satisfying. It was like walking in the desert for days and having your first sip of water. When the straw touched my lips and I tasted blood, I wanted more and more and did not stop.

This felt satisfying. It's like a drop of blood gave me adrenaline, the type of adrenalin I seemed my entire life. I felt alive; I placed my lips over the straw and drank the blood. With every drop of blood, I felt more vital and more alive. My vision I could see as far as binoculars.

I could hear sounds I never could before. I looked up at Maria; she had become younger. Is it just me, or is it my imagination, "Maria, Is this you?"

She stood up, taking the empty vile. As I stood straight, the broken glass in my back was no longer there, and the pain was gone entirely, "Jia? Where is she?" Jia walked over from the door slowly up to me.

Her eyes had turned light hazel brown, her dark hair was hanging over her shoulder, she grew slightly taller, and the stone on my chest had dimmed.

"What the hell is happening?" I snapped.

Maria looked over at me and took me by the arm, lifting it and showing me my arm. It had more hair on, "go to the mirror," she said softly.

I hesitantly walked over to the mirror, which was next to my room. I looked up in the mirror. I had a beard, and my skin glowed with it. My eyes have changed to bright brown eyes.

I turned around and noticed the change in my body, I looked different.

Jia came from behind me and stood next to me. Her eyes carried confidence and maturity.

Maria walked up behind me and touched my shoulder gently, "do you now know who you are?"

I nodded my head, "are you really my great-grandmother?" Maria reached out her hand, took my hand, and walked me to the lounge, "you and your sister, we were waiting for so long. I am glad you found your way back to us.

The guy who killed your mom is out there, and you will find him."

I stood there like a soldier obeying orders, "what about her?"

Maria smiled and ran her fingers through Jia's hair, "she is destined for greater things."

I didn't understand what she meant by that, but I never bothered questioning; too much was happening, "where is Maka?"

Maria placed her hands behind her back and shook her head, "Maka is fine, she will be back soon, but I don't know what you are thinking. You and Maka can't be together."

Without thinking, I said, "why not? Who are you to tell me who I can be and can't be with."

Maria looked at me, "I am your protector, and the only way I can protect you is by keeping that lady away from you. You sucked on her blood, and you could have died if we never had two viles of her blood."

Kai remembered how weak she was the last time he drank her blood, "did she willingly offer it to you?"

Maria shook her head, "that doesn't matter. You two are never to be seen together again."

"Or else what, Maria?"

Jia took my hand, sensing I was becoming angry. She looked up at me, "don't, Kai."

Maria turned around and walked away, "do you know what happens when you throw water over a fire?"

"I do," I answered without thinking.

"Do you know the consequences for a vampire and a wolf to be involved?"

"I don't care," I answered.

Maria's shadow suddenly had a chill as she walked up to me. Her eyes darkened as she grabbed me by the neck and pushed me to the wall, lifting me to the wall, "you are a bloody idiot. You have no idea of the consequences of your actions."

Jia grabbed Maria from the back and pulled her so hard that she flew backward, hitting the concrete wall, "leave my brother."

A six-year-old being so powerful? Am I missing something? Jia was walking up to Maria to finish her when I shouted, "Jia enough, that's not what mom would want."

Jia stopped.

Maria looked frightened. Are her grandkids this strong? Jia tossed her like a feather. Maria stood up as Jia stood in front of me. Maria dusted herself off, surprised and frightened of Jia.

She would have expected that from me but not from Jia, but since I never fought back, my strength was still a mystery, "don't say I never warned you. Darkness will cloud this house and swallow us if you choose Maka."

I was pissed off at her for bringing Maka into this, and I wanted answers. Jia was calm as she turned and walked to her room, closing her door. Maria went downstairs. I went back to my room. What just happened?"
