THE FIRST DAY

My royal guard, armed and outfitted, assembled and mounted their horses. They weren't in their formal uniforms like last time. Instead, they were wearing dark traveling clothes and leather armor beneath their cloaks.

Even the large carriage looked plain and unremarkable, its fortified materials hidden by stark black paint. It was important for our retinue to not draw attention while we traveled. Going out while showcasing our wealth and status is like drawing a huge red target on ourselves.

But the carriage's interior was plush and cozy. It was equipped with the softest cushions and blankets for a pleasant riding experience.

Amelia, as my handmaid, was required to be part of our journey to attend to my needs. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have asked her to come along. I am capable of taking care of myself, and I also knew Amelia was terrified of traveling.
