James once again walked through the streets of Camberwell with an attitude, reprimanding himself for being such a fool. He should have known Edwin was going to hurt him, but he trusted him anyway.
“I’m such a fool…” he whispered to himself. But a voice next to him startled him back to reality.
“A fool? Well you don’t look like a jester to me,” a soft elderly voice came from a bench beside James.
Looking down, James slowly relaxed. “Mrs. Porter… you startled me.”
Eva simply laughed at James and patted the spot on the bench next to her. “I noticed. You nearly jumped out of your skin.”
Going a little red, James sat down next to her out of embarrassment.
“So, tell me Mr. Granton. Why do you think yourself to be a fool?” Eva asked as she tossed some bread crumbs out for some ducks to feast on.
James let out a long sigh as he set his briefcase down on the ground next to his feet. “I’m afraid I opened my heart up to someone who was careless with it.”
