CHAPTER 38: FINALE

“Lola, are you happy? Your favorite grandchild, whom you love more than me, is visiting you together with me,” Rodney said, talking to Lola.

“That’s not true,” I countered. “You know she loves you more than anyone.”

“Yeah? Do you know why she didn’t file our marriage contract? It’s because of you. She didn’t want you to be trapped in our marriage if you are not happy. She wanted you to have the option to leave me and look for the person who could make you happy.”

“Did she say that?”

“Yeah. So she left me with the burden of deciding for your fate. What am I to do? I didn’t want to make you miserable by keeping you beside me even if you don’t love me. But I also didn’t want to let you go.”

I stared at him, trying to read the truth from his face.

From looking at Lola’s epitaph, he turned his gaze towards me.
