'I was running through the forest, feeling lighter than ever. I came upon a stream and decided to have a drink. I was shocked by the reflection that looked back at me in the water. Looking back at me was a small white wolf with gray markings. The wolf had a long scar across her face and dark green eyes.
A bark behind me had me turning around to find Clay in his wolf form. He was much larger than me when he leaned down to lick my forehead. With a wolfish smile and a wag of his tail, and took off into the trees. With a happy yip, I ran after him.'
I snuggled into Clay's bare chest as I woke up. The arms that were around me tightened, pulling me close.
"Did you have a nightmare, Little Bird?" Clay asked in his sexy sleep voice.
I shook my head and then told him about my dream.
"Dreams are a good sign. Your wolf is preparing for the change." He said, kissing me on the forehead.
"What should I expect to happen?"
"Umm, the dreams are normal. I remember having a few. The worst is the fever and the body aches. The closer you are to changing, the more painful it gets. I won't lie, Little Bird; shifting is painful until you get used to it. Every bone in your body breaks and reshapes into something else. I always felt sorry for the Guardians who shifted into bears." He mumbled, then pressed his lips to mine. " If you aren't going back to sleep, I'm up for doing other things before I have to leave."
A few days passed, and I started getting body aches, and it felt like growing pains mixed with the flu but amplified.
By Friday, the aches were bearable enough for me to go to Clay's homecoming game. I would be damned if I was missing it.
I was sitting in the bleachers with Penny, Tommy, and Zack, jumping up and down, when I spotted the guys coming out of the school and onto the field. I hadn't seen Clay play before, so I was excited.
I was shocked when he spotted me immediately; he waved as I smiled, then blew a kissed at him.
"You guys are gross." Says Penny
"I like it," Tommy says, "it's nice knowing true love is still out there."
"It freaking makes me want to vomit," said Zack
I shrugged, then focused back on the field as the game began.
We won 20 to 16; after the game, I met a sweaty Clay on the field, where he engulfed me in a bear hug.
"How are you feeling, Little Bird?" He asked, pressing his lips to mine.
"My bones hurt pretty bad. I hope I can last through the dance tomorrow."
The next day I stood before the mirror looking at my reflection. The girl looking back at me looked so much more than an empty shell I had seen only a month ago. I wish my mom was here, but I am glad I met Clay.
Right around four o'clock, there was a knock on the door, and a very handsome Clay walked in.
Today he wore a white suit with a navy blue undershirt, a white tie, and navy blue shoes. Not many people could pull off white, but my god, did he clean up nice… and he was all mine… hehe.
We all had a blast at the dance; I was shocked when I saw Penny and Zack together. Penny wore a beautiful black peacock dress that had all the guys drooling.
After the dance, I was waiting out by the Jeep while Clay was off to the side talking to some of his friends when Harmony walked over with her arms crossed, with my new sister right behind her. I really didn't want it to be like this with Shelby.
"I have a few words I would like to say," Harmony said, " First, just because you are somehow the Chief's long-lost daughter doesn't mean we will accept you into the tribe. And second, a girl who has a broken wolf and can't shift doesn't belong in the pack. No one wants you in this tribe; just because your mother whored herself into the Chief's pants doesn't make you one of us."
"What did you just call my mother?" I growled.
"I said your mother was a whore."
My anger boiled over with a growl; I went to lunge at her but gasped when hot searing pain ran through my body. I almost fell to my knees, but Clay was there to catch me.
"Clay, it hurts," I whimpered as he lifted me.
"What's going on, Clay? Shelby told us she couldn't shift." Whined Harmony
Clay got into her face with a growl, "The shit Shelby is telling you is nothing but lies. Now if you'll excuse me, I must take my mate home before she shifts in front of all these people."
After helping me into the Jeep, he held my hand as we pulled out of the parking lot. "I got you, baby. We just gotta drive to my house; my Papa will know what to do."
