The hidden truth

19XX:

Donavan wrapped his arms around his beloved wife, "Daisy....I have to go."

Daisy let him hold her as she cried, "But our little one will be here any day."

Donavan cringed. He didn't want to miss the birth, but he had a duty to the Council of the Mists; they kept watch making sure the mortals were kept safe from and mostly unaware of the other world; the supernatural world of shifters magic and faerie.

Daisy turned, "Council be damned! I need you here! Our baby needs you here!"

A knock on the door made them both look up.

Will and the pack alpha Seelie stood in the doorway. "I am sorry, it's time." Seelie frowned.

Daisy marched up to him unafraid of the wolf and poked him in the chest, "You keep him safe you hear me."

Seelie blinked at her. His wolf bristled, but he kept it locked. He understood the predicament she was in, "Daisy this mission-"

Daisy choked a sob as Donavan went to her, "I have to go to keep this little one safe." He rubbed her belly and felt the child kick. He sadly smiled. The kick was strong and healthy, "I love you little one."

Present:

Ruby sat next to Colt as he drove to the alpha's house. They exchanged stories of growing up. She told him about the day she and Joey fought off the thugs.

He told her about the time he and Beau raided a British encampment just outside a fae sithen.

Colt wanted to ask about her mother, but hesitated; he didn't want to make her feel obligated in sharing the story.

Ruby took a breath, "I grew up seeing the unreal everyday. My mom would tend the births of some of the she wolves."

Colt listened. It's like Ruby knew his mind. He squeezed her hand.

Ruby smiled back. She normally didn't talk about her mom to strangers, but Colt made her feel safe and she wanted him to know, "I remember one night an actual she wolf was in labor. I guess a member of a rival pack mated her. She only had one pup..."

Ruby shook her head, "A little boy...he was born in his human form. The she wolf didn't make it. Mom said she was weaken because of lack of care. The alpha was furious that a wolf would leave a pregnant female alone."

Pausing she scootted closer to Colt.

"My mom," Ruby sniffled, "She calmed him down and worked some basic scrying to locate the father. Good thing too; he was stuck in wolf form."

Colt winced he knew that wasn't good.

Ruby traced the back of Colt's hand, "That was the last thing my mom did before she was killed."

Colt kissed the top of her head as he drove down the dirt road to the alpha's, "What happened?" He asked.

Ruby shook her head, "I don't know. I was away at a camp for young authors. I should have been there. I should have been by her side."

Colt parked the car and faced her, "I thank every deity you weren't." He kissed her softly.

Ruby looked up at him after he parted from the kiss and felt lighter.

She couldn't say when but she fell in love with him.

Ruby's eyes grew bright blue as she realized that he was her fated mate. Colt smiled, "You are beautiful."

He leaned in for another kiss when the alpha knocked on the window.

"Mind not making out in my drive way with a girl I think of as a daughter."
