"Noah, if you don't want to talk, why call me?"
There was displeasure in her voice. The last thing she wants to do is talk to him. She just wants him to say why he called and get off her phone.
She has other things to worry about and he isn't important anymore. She is tired of him acting like a dick. She's tired of him acting like the prince charming, when all along he's the prince with no charming attitude.
When Claire was obvious he was not going to say anything, he surprised her by speaking up.
"Hi claire"
Claire was slightly taken aback, she didn't expect him to speak up with such a tune. He was calm, not taunting her like he usually does. Though both have had each other's contacts for as long as they can remember, there has never been a call exchange between both of them. That's why Claire was momentarily silence when she saw who was calling.
It's not Noah calling is the issue but how the conversation is going and how possible it might likely to end.
After a few minutes, Claire answered: "Hi Noah. What do you want?"
Silence, Claire waited for Noah to speak up again but to her surprise, he didn't.
"Are you listening to me, Noah?" She snapped. Noah didn't answer.
Claire sighed exasperatedly
"Well I'm bored and I'll hang up now..."
But before she hung up, Noah spoke up.
"Claire...please don't hang up"
Claire frowned. Noah's voice sounded different, sadder somehow. Why was his tone so serious? Is he trying to tell her something? Or did something happen? Claire was confused.
"What's going on Noah?"
Noah took a moment to collect himself before answering:
"Claire, I am sorry for everything"
Claire was confused again. Noah? Apologizing?! No. He's not apologizing, he's lying! She doesn't give a fuck what he says.
"I mean it. I am so sorry for everything that happened to us. I never meant to hurt you."
Claire was silent and waited for Noah to continue talking. This better be worth listening to. Noah's voice had been soft which scared Claire slightly. Her heart was pounding against her ribcage and her breathing became shallow.
Noah continued: "Claire, I'm not asking for your forgiveness, but I just want you to know that I am sorry and you deserved so much more. I know I have been no good to you, bullying you whenever I get the Chance but be rest assured that it won't happen anymore.".
Claire remained silent again, thinking whether to let him continue or shut the phone. He's acting weird. His tone was low and somber but his voice was so weak that it scares Claire and almost made her want to forgive him. But the fact that this was Noah, the most stubborn guy that made her life a living hell in school.
Okay, she wants to understand something, is it because she reported him to her uncle? So if she had not filed a complaint about him, he would not have ever try making peace with her. So she doesn't believe anything he is trying to say now.
"What is the reason for your apology? What are you trying to prove?"
Claire questioned sternly.
There was a pause and finally, Noah answered:" Nothing, Claire. I am just saying sorry for my mistakes and hopefully giving you an offer of friendship. We can start by being friends"
Claire scoffed loudly. She couldn't help but laugh at him. Friends?! She can't even imagine how pathetic he must look. He has the nerve to ask her to be his friend.
"And what made you think I would want to be friends with you after everything?"
Noah cleared his throat then replied:
"Because I have changed."
This caused Claire to furrow her eyebrows. She couldn't believe what she had just heard.
"How can you be so sure?"
Claire raised an eyebrow
"You have done many terrible things to me and yet you want me to believe you have changed. You do realize that I am not daft to believe you can actually change"
Noah remained silent. He was silent for a while then said:
"Look Claire, I know that you're angry and I really regret everything that I did. I really do. And that's why I want to make amends. It's up you to believe that I am a changed person now"
Claire stayed silent and thought for a while but then decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being.
"Okay. Fine" she nodded.
Noah's lips curved into a huge grin.
"Thank you Claire. I can assure you won't regret being friends with me"
