Chapter 231

She was larger than me and clearly much more experienced in battle.

The other wolves lunged at me. One tore open my side while another bit into my shoulder. I howled in pain, trying to shake them off frantically and claw my way out.

But I knew I wouldn’t get out of this. My luck had finally run out.

When I thought I could have a new life in Shifter City, I’d actually headed toward my death.

A surge of anger rushed through me and with a howl, I flexed and shook all the wolves from me. My claws slashed out and raked one across the throat. Blood sprayed from the wound and arched through the air. The wolf’s limp body collapsed on top of me.

As I attempted to wriggle out from under the dead wolf, BJ leapt to my side and swiped her sharp claws at my exposed throat. She no longer bothered to taunt me. She obviously wanted to get the job done quickly and move on.

But before her claws met their mark, she went airborne. The wolves snapping hungrily around me were also heaved backward by a great force.

A roar thundered so mightily the forest shook. Foliage fell, and dirt flew into the air.

A black wolf stood tall beside me, snarling, his gray eyes searing with rage and power. My wolf recognized him immediately. Sideburns’ wolf snarled and roared again before scanning the threats, ready to deliver a death sentence.

Every wolf dropped to the ground and showed their bellies in submission, including BJ.

The Alpha Heir’s wolf had tracked me here too. Of all the people and all the wolves, it was the mate who had rejected me who had saved my ass.

I let out a whimper of pain and rose to my paws, ready to use this opportunity to limp away, but the black wolf lunged, faster than lightning, and blocked me. I blinked at him, and he nudged his jaw gently against my shoulder to push me down.

He wanted me to rest while he handled things. I’d be a fool to disobey him under the circumstances. He was, after all, the only one standing between me and my attackers.

I sat on my haunches and waited, my head dizzy from the loss of blood. The wolf’s rough tongue rolled out to lick my wounded muzzle.

All the other wolves let out whimpers and lowered their heads to the ground as they realized the truth. I was undeniably the Alpha Heir’s fated mate. The man could hide the truth and deny me, but his wolf could never fight his primal instincts and needs, which were to feed, defend, and claim his true mate.

BJ’s wolf released an outraged howl. Bitch hadn’t seen this coming. The black wolf responded with a warning snarl that rippled with power. The silver wolf lowered her head and whimpered.

She trained her eyes on me, hatred and murderous jealousy brimming in their dark orbs. This wasn’t over between us.
