I knew with absolute certainty that the French princess would not allow me to live. She’d take any opportunity to kill me.
My rainbow wolf raised her front paw and managed to show her the middle claw.

Jared’s wolf continued to stand between Viviane and her pack, defending me. That was something I hadn’t expected. The resentment I harbored for the man reduced to a faint pulse. He had finally earned his name.
Viviane’s silver wolf made a whimpering, pleading sound, wanting to approach Jared’s black wolf. The princess in her human form had staked her claim on Jared in the courtyard, but the relationship between their wolves presented differently.
The black wolf growled to warn her away. She skidded back and whined at the rejection.
The man and the wolf were at odds and wanted different things.
The brown wolf that had first attacked me growled to back up her princess. From the bloodlust in her eyes, I knew she wasn’t willing to give up the kill just yet, not even in the presence of the Alpha Heir.
She stalked to the side toward me, planning to get past the black wolf. The black wolf snapped his massive head toward her. The brown wolf lurched, and the black wolf hauled himself toward her, meeting the brown wolf in the middle and smacking her to the ground.
She yelped in fear, an ounce of sense returning to her. She rolled onto her back in surrender. The black wolf only snarled in rage, then opened his powerful jaw and tore out her throat with his massive teeth.
With blood dripping from his fangs, he looked up at the other wolves as if to remind them that anyone who defied him would be killed mercilessly. It was that simple.
BJ and her pack whimpered pathetically, begging for mercy. The black wolf snarled louder. He wanted her and her pack gone.
BJ let out a low howl, then shot into the forest. Her minions followed, giving the black wolf a wide berth and running after their princess with their tails tucked between their legs.
Within seconds, the enemy wolves were gone. The sound of their paws padding against twigs and leaves faded.
The forest rustled despite the lack of a breeze. New presences appeared in the forefront of my awareness, but I didn’t feel threatened.
I pricked my ears, listening. The Alpha Heir’s elite team was coming.
Jared’s wolf had reached me in the nick of time. If he’d come seconds later, Viviane’s wolf would have killed me. Jared’s wolf was more ruthless and impulsive than the calculating man inside him. If it were completely up to the man, I doubt I’d still be alive. But then, as the Alpha Heir, Jared didn’t act on his primal instincts. He was a major political player and let that guide his thoughts.
The guards, all in their beast forms, spread out in the forest to guard their boss and secure the perimeter.
I yipped a quiet thank you to the black wolf and indicated that I should probably get going, but the black wolf blocked me again before I could limp away.
