My heart begins to form a deep pit as I stare back at him. Scott sees where my eyes have strayed and gives him stink eyes. A girl walks up to Eras, Britney, one of the most popular girls in school, one of the most prettiest girls in school.
I see her give me a passing glance as the hall goes quiet again as she approaches him. She flashes her best smile and you can see her hips swaying as she walks to him.
I school my features into one of cold indifference as I hear Britney's voice, practically dripping honey. She asks him if he's new to the school and he nods. The nod sems to be all the confirmation she was waiting for as she clings to his arm and let's out a squeal of delight.
I don't want to care. I don't want to feel bothered about this but I do. If Eras falls for Britney's tricks then this little victory I have secured will be undermined. She asks him to come sit with her and the other boys from the popular group and my heart sinks. I expect to hear the patter of foot on the floor and the scraping of a chair. All of that happen but instead of the scraping to come from a bit farther off, It actually comes from a closer distance, like really close.
I open my eyes to find Eras taking a seat on the other side of my table. I don't even know when I closed my eyes because I sure wish I didn't. The smile he gives me Is one of understanding. A Smile that says he gets it. "Well you can't get rid of me that easily" he says and I feel myself smile involuntarily. Britney is still standing there shocked, open mouthed and so vulnerable to Scott making fun of her "Careful there, I think you just dropped your dignity".
The way he emphasizes dignity makes me crack up and I can hear both of them laughing too. Guess one thing in my life was bound to go well someday, it might as well be today for all I care.
Aron and his new girlfriend are boring holes into my back and almost everyone in the hall is looking our way. "Both of you are nothing but trouble" I say and Scott gives me a sly grin. "Now don't go tarnishing my dignity sister" he says waving a fork at me like any moment from now he'll chop off my head with it. The joke still doesn't fail to make me giggle a bit and I think that's what I do for a good while. It's been a long time since I laughed like this.
The cafeteria becomes even more busy and I sigh at the new inflow of students. At least that gives me a reprieve from eyes I'd better have elsewhere. "Are you sure you fixed your zip well?" Scott asks and I raise an eyebrow. "Why do you ask?" I say raising a spoon of the peach parfait I ordered. "That guy's been staring at you.
