“My name is Moses!” The guy replied. “Sorry to bother you, but I had to. Saw you the last time at the beauty pageant held off campus, girl you were a killer, too bad you didn’t win that competition. You actually deserved to win that thing, I mean look at you!” Moses said flagging his hands towards her in an illustration that she should look at her body. Lanre didn’t need a prophet to tell her what the guy wanted.
“So have you been stalking me since then?” Lanre asked. “No na! Haba! I am not a stalker”. He said. Then he told her he was just standing across discussing with a friend when he saw her and thought luck wanted them to meet each other. “Omo luck don suffer for this life o! God forbid that kin luck!” Lanre said in Nigeria pidgin which means, “You are using luck as an excuse! I do no want such luck!” But it is basically an exclamation when using the Nigeria pidgin. Lanre walked away leaving the guy but he kept chasing after her asking her to spare him some time so they can talk. Lanre managed to stop this time.
“What do you want to say?” Lanre asked him. He told her that they should go to a cool place to get away from the sun. “For inside the harmattan, you de look for cool place? Abeg na which person pikin you de plan to sacrifice give cold?” Lanre asked him if he was planning to kill her by suggesting they go sit in a cool place when it was clearly an harmattan period.
“Sorry ma! Please do not be vexed with me. Na me kon find trouble”. The guy said to her apologising saying it was his fault for stopping her in the first place. “See you be like abgani with your worwor face!” He said again calling her ugly and referring to her as extremely skinny. But Lanre was not as skinny as he had called her. He just wanted to spite her because he felt she was playing hard to get. Lanre shook her head and walked away. Then she found a spot to sit down after walking her legs tired. She closed her eyes as she listened to the music play. It was a song by Ass, titled “The Beginning”. She kept it on replay as it is a song age really loves. If you ask her why she really loves ASA, she will tell you, “Her voice is cool. Hearing it alone is listening to the softest of all lullabies. And her songs always carry meaningful messages”.
Just then Lanre could feel herself dosing off. So she stood up and started to walk around again. She has made up her mind not to go back home. Even if she would, it will be late in the night. So Lanre walked around listening to music. Then she suddenly came by a singer. She removed the headset so she can listen to the singer. He was a young talent who’s fame was yet to leave the confines of the school environment. He would sing while playing his guitar. Whenever she listens to him, she always fall in love with his voice.
