Feeling Superior

“Calm down! You should not blame her now. She is just worried about your health”. Mr Okafor said. “Don’t worry, I will soon get DPO on the line and tell him to dispatch boys to go search for the young lady”. Mr Okafor said to reassure his wife.

Anita looked at her father surprised that he has taken the matter as far as reporting it to the police. “Dad, it has not gotten to that. Lanre is fine. Nothing happened to her”. Anita said to her father. He looked at her wondering what she meant.

Mrs Okafor immediately stood up from the chair she was sitting on. Every ear had become curious.

“Where did you say she is?” The mother asked Anita. Anita shook her head at her mother’s attitude. “Mom! I never said she is any where in particular. I just know she is fine and you people should stop being worried. She went to see a friend. She may likely come back this evening or tomorrow morning”. Anita said to them.

Ify frowned. Lanre never told her anything about having a friend in Abuja. And even if she was going to see a friend, why was she ignoring her calls? And why did she not tell her where she was going to. Well, it seems Lanre will never change. Ify thought. These thoughts made her angry. She was here afraid that her friend was missing, while the friend was busy going to visit s friend she knows nothing about. This is not the first time Lanre is doing this kind of a thing to her. She has done this on several different occasions.

Ify could remember that Saturday night she and Fred were going to go look for Lanre who left the house in the afternoon and was still not back as at 9 pm.

“But why did she not tell me na? I would have asked Gozie to drop her off”. Anita’s mother said.

“Mama! You see the problem, you are always trying to get he close to Gozie or get Gozie close to her. Probably the reason she left without telling nobody”. Alice the first daughter said. The mother eyes her disapprovingly.

“Will you shut up your mouth? Go and talk to your children at home that way when you go to your husband’s house, not me. I am your mother, talk to me with respect”. The mother said directing her words to her eldest daughter, Alice.

“But mama, I did not disrespect you in any way”. Alice said walking away from the place. She has had enough of Africa mother’s always feeling superior to their daughters.

Ify tried to calm her aunty down who got vexed at her eldest daughter for walking out on her.

“We are here!” K said as he got down from his car. Lanre asked him where he had brought her to. She got down from the car as well. While K locked the car. Then he walked towards her and asked her to follow him.
