How People Squanders Money

Olashile Adewale looks at Mrs. Okafor with much interest. This made Mrs. Okafor happy. She decided to tell the woman she had come along with the said niece of hers. She told her that if she saw Ify and didn’t like her, then they could just forget that they ever talked about this.

“It has not gotten to that. As long as she is your niece and is well cultured as you said, then I’m sure she is a perfect match for my son”. Olashile said.

“So, does that mean we are going to be in-laws?” Mrs. Okafor asked. The other woman told her that was for certain, they were going to be in-laws, even though the relationship was quiet distant.

“Don’t worry, her mother is the Manager of CBN branch at Enugu. This is definitely going to be a win-win for everyone”. Mrs. Okafor said. On hearing this, a bold smile crept into Olashile’s lips. This marriage was definitely going to hold. The governor’s wife only complain was that Enugu was too far, but at least, if it were to be the branch at Lagos or Abuja. Abuja would be a head on.

Ify sat quietly at a spot where there was barely anybody. She had emptied her glass already. She wanted another drink, but her issue was “how to get up and go get one”, since non of the waiters was coming her way.

While she was still contemplating on what to do, the MC had commenced with recognising the dignitaries present in the party. Some of them sent representatives. Ify was amazed at the names she was hearing. Top politicians, and business icons.

“It seems, the rich only dance with the rich”. Ify twisted her lips as she thought of this. Lanre would be swimming in the company of the rich, of she has accepted K’s Proposal. But yet she asked herself, will his parents even accept such a marriage? K was not just anybody, he was the son of the Governor of Lagos state. That means, his parents may not have even accepted Lanre, unless they are simple minded people.

It seems it was for Lanre’s own good to have rejected his proposal. She watched as the celebrants mother was being called up stage. That was Her Excellency, Olashile Adewale. She looked beautiful and young. Her buba (Yoruba native dress) fits her perfectly well. What money does, especially excess money.

Ify watched as the woman stood waving at everyone with her chin held high. The grace she was trying to exude doesn’t seem to match her well. It seemed forced. But she had to carry herself like one of those sophist to match her background.

Just after that little show, the party has moved to the point of cutting the cake. There wasn’t much to do, but they were going to waste a whole lot of time. She wondered if it was necessary for the cake to be launched. It pissed her how people squanders money, all in the name of cutting a cake. People were just giving out hundreds of thousands up to a million just for the cutting of the cake.
