I Won't Marry K

Lanre finally stood up from the bed to go open the door. “Hi!” She said to Ify while using her body to block the way. She was so absent minded that she did not realising while she was telling Ify to get in, she was standing in the way.

“Lanre, you will have to step aside if I am to come in”. Ify said to Lanre. Lanre stepped aside after realising she was indeed blocking Ify from coming in. Ify got into the room while Lanre shut the door.

“It’s been a while”. Ify said. Lanre just kept silent. She didn’t have anything pleasant to say in actuality. And she was trying not to say something bad.

“Lanre, are you angry?” Ify asked. Lanre just kept mute. She wouldn’t say anything either. Ify sighed. For a moment she had forgotten she had come to talk with Lanre and not some other girl. She had totally forgotten not to expect Lanre to reply her words. Lanre was so good at giving silent treatment.

“It was not my fault believe it or not. I went to his birthday party with my aunt who practically dragged me along. His mother was there and somehow she and aunt Ada had made some sort of deal. You know how aunt Ada is. She is persistent. She wouldn’t let me be unless I agreed. Besides, they spoke to my parents without my knowing and they accepted it”. Ify said to Lanre. Lanre sighed shaking her head remotely.

“So why are you telling me all these?” Lanre asked. She was beginning to get really annoyed. Ify held her hand.

“Lanre, I swear! I won’t marry K, just lete figure things out. I may get him to call off the engagement, just let this night pass. Please don’t do anything funny. Remember it is the governor’s son. I don’t what you to be humiliated in anyway”. Ify said. Lanre laughed. She didn’t know if it was what Ify said it it was how she said it, or it was the fact that she was listening to Ify say all these things that was funny, but she just laughed.

Ify was worried that Lanre was laughing instead of giving her a reply. “Why are you laughing like that Lanre? Please say something! Yell at me or do whatever you want, but please do not keep mum”. Ify pleaded.

“Why would I say something? What do you want me to say?” Lanre asked. Ify looked away. “That’s right! Nothing! There’s nothing for me to say. Do whatever you want Ify”. Lanre said.

Ify shook her head. “Lanre you don’t understand. I know you are vexed, and I’m sorry!” Ify said. She shut her eyes tightly as if contemplating on something. Then she bit her lips.

“Lanre, you know I and Odenigbo are engaged, right?” Ify asked. Lanre just stare at her blankly. Ify decided to go on despite Lanre not giving her a reply.

“Have you wondered why I never wear an engagement ring? Have you?” Ify asked this time. Lanre told her it was none of her business, so why would she bother about such things.
