Lanre smirked on hearing Temitope’s words. It was noticeable to Temitope. It disgusted her that Lanre did that.
“So who are you to Ify?” Temitope asked. Lanre told her that she and Ify were have been friends for four years now. And that was all she said. She stood up excusing herself. Just then the governor’s presence was announced She had to stop. Everyone stood up to honour the governor. As for Lanre, she was already standing. “All for one man, as if he is God!”. Lanre muttered rolling her eyes in the process.
Everybody got seated after the governor was seated. “What a charade! Acting like the high and mighty.... I’m sure he has a lot of rotten eggs stored up in that fat tummy of his”. Lanre muttered yet again. She despised politicians. She felt they were all hypocrites. But here she was falling for the son of one, the son of the governor of Lagos state.
Lanre had to sit back down together with Temitope and Austin. She felt she should not go out anymore until probably when it’s time for the dance. It was in the program. “It is going to be a really suffocating one, waiting for them to exchange their rings and bla bla bla shit!” Lanre said in her head. She pushed her head backward and forced some air out of her mouth.
Lanre wished she could just close her eyes and sleep through the event. The governor was sitting together with who she believed was his wife. She wondered why Kehinde was the only one now sitting with them and the sister was here.
“Aren’t you going to join your family?” Lanre asked. Temitope held Austin protectively as if someone would steal him away from her. She told Lanre that Austin was her family. Which means she was already with are family.
“It’s not like you are yet married to him”. Lanre said. She muttered a few words and then turned away to avoid eye contact with Temitope.
“Who’s your father? What does he do?” Temitope asked out of annoyance. But Lanre ignored her. Austin had to rub Temitope on the back to calm her down. She pushed his hand away. Then she kept staring daggers at Lanre. Lanre smirked. She could feel Temitope’s eyes on her. She held the glass of water she was drinking before now. She had already placed it on her lips but lost the appetite to take in the water. She dropped the glass back on the table. Then she looked at Temitope disapprovingly.
“Stop!” She said to Temitope. Lanre was beginning to get uncomfortable with Temitope’s stares that seem endless.
“I won’t mind pouring in alcohol in your eyes if you do not stop”. Lanre said. Temitope told Lanre she hates her. Lanre smiled and told her that if she hates her, it will only make her safe. According to her she was not interested in women. Temitope saw that as an insult as well. She told Lanre she would get back at her.
