Ify shook her head pitiably. Then she scoffed. “I’m doing this for you as well! You wouldn’t even be able to marry K if you had accepted his proposal. You are from a lowly background. You only have a brother in the navy, nothing more. His rank is not even high”. Ify said. Then she told Lanre to think about her cousin or her brother. According to her, she was giving Lanre a second chance to come back to her senses.
Lanre chuckled. Turns out that people’s biggest enemy is not the man they tag as an enemy but their own personal assumptions. A man who makes assumptions always thinks himself more righteous than others and thinks others were sinful and should listen to them. They feel what they think about others is the truth and that is what should be. Ify must think she was going to drag K with her because she was avoiding her. Ify must have think she was that evil because she did some things back then in school which made people think she’s wicked. Mostly because she has her own principles and discipline to follow, and it did not match up their taste, they concluded her to be wicked. And called her Yoruba demoness. Some even called her that because they believed Yoruba’s to be unforgiving and people vast with charms.
“I won’t listen to you Ify. Instead you should listen to me. I will show you that everyman is made up of two sides, the good and the bad. And for me, there is no neutrality. You have seen my good side. Now you will be seeing my bad side, because the Governor’s son is mine!” Lanre said. Her words felt cold in Ify’s ears. But then she still wanted to make it clear to her that K was hers.
“No he is mine. We are already engaged”. Ify said. “I don’t care. You can keep his ring. I will take his heart. Whether I marry him or not is not my concern, but you have to pay for having insulted me too many times”. Lanre said to Ify. And like a flash of lightning, Lanre pulled Ify and pushed her out of her office. Then she told her to leave if she doesn’t want to get beaten up. But Ify stood. She was baffled. She did not expect Lanre to react this way at all. She had thought Lanre would realise she was overreacting to things and will start talking to her. But things kept on getting out of control and now, they were severing their friendship.
“Are you being serious right now? All these could just be a joke, you know? We could act like nothing happened”. Lanre suddenly fell.
“Oh my god! Oloru o! Hey! Somebody should help me”. Lanre screamed. And she wouldn’t stop until her workers and customers had come in. Meanwhile Ify stood there looking without knowing what to do. Was something actually wrong with Lanre? Or Lanre was trying to put her in trouble? Ify wondered.
