“I’m not calling it off anymore. My parents already believe Kehinde to be their son in-law. And he is quiet the nice guy unlike what you made him look like to me. I like him too. You did not accept him back then, should I also call off my engagement because of you?” Ify asked. But Lanre did not say anything.
“Lanre listen, we are not children that do not know exactly what they want. I want to settle for K who you already let go. My decision should not drive a rift between us”. Ify said taking Lanre’s hand. Lanre withdrew her hand and slapped Ify.
“It would have been ok if you had not already gone to Victory and her clique to tell them of my little adventure with Kehinde. You even dare to come out and tell them to stop because I won’t be happy? Now tell me, aren’t you a clown?” Lanre asked. Ify was already angry because of the slap Lanre gave to her. She pushed Lanre in retaliation making Lanre to fall on one of the chair in the office.
“How dare you slap me? I did not tell them, but what if I did? I have never seen someone as selfish as you. You do not want him, yet you hate me for having him. Gozie likes you, Ebubenna likes you! Even Okechukwu likes you. Those men are ready to fall at your feet, yet you want to drag a man you abandoned because you found out he is the governor’s son”. Ify said. Her words were like darts shot right into Lanre’s heart. The wounds were deep because those darts traveled farther than one could imagine.
“I don’t want us to come to this point. But it seems I will no longer listen to my mother’s words. You are no longer my friend”. Ify said. She was astound when Lanre laughed out loudly like a witch in her prime. Lanre’s laugh was confusing to Ify.
Then Lanre stood up. She walked towards the door and opened it. She held it with one hand and with the other she pointed outside, a gesture to Ify that she should leave.
“You and I stopped being friends long ago. I was the one holding unto a broken thread. I’m not churchy like you and I do whatsoever is in my mind without trying to impress anyone. But I acted strong trying to be there for you even at my weakest. Did you ever see my tears and wipe them as a friend?” Lanre asked.
“And yes you are right. I’m not rich, neither do I have affluence like you. But keep this word in mind Ify, I will make you never look low on others again. Not even in your next life. Now get out”. Lanre said. Lanre said to her.
“Are you asking me to leave?” Ify asked. Lanre told her to drop the irritating attitude and leave. They were no longer friends. They were now worst than strangers.
