“Ify, since when did I raise you to be evil? What happened that you have to treat your friend like that? Ogini? Or don’t you know you are now a public figure?” Mrs. Ochuzi yelled over the phone. Ify kept the phone on a table so it was not close to her ears. She wore a frown. Nothing her mother will say that will make her ever befriend Lanre again. Lanre had blackmailed her and acted a victim to gain human sympathy. She thought for someone like Lanre who thought highly of herself to go that low was desperation at it’s peak. If someone else had done it, it would not be totally disgusting to her. But Lanre’s case of different. Lanre acted like she will never do such a shitty thing.
“Ify! Why are you keeping me quiet? I told you you will not find a friend like Lanre”. The mother said. This pissed Ify off.
“Oh oh! Odinma (it’s good)! I won’t find a friend like Lanre, Amen!” Ify said with sarcasm dripping off her words. Then she hangs up on her mother and threw her phone down. The only person she wants to see his reaction was K’s. But it has been three days and he has not said anything. He only chatted her ones which was last night. He only asked her if she was fine and that he would stay back two more days to monitor the work himself. Then he would come over to have dinner with her as planned.
Being impatient, Ify picked up her phone and called K. She felt relieved he picked up.
“Hello! What’s up?” K asked her. Ify gritted her teeth.
“Why are you not saying anything? Did you not see what’s all over social media? They call me evil for pushing your ex”. Ify said. K sighed. Then without saying a word, he hanged up. Ify tried calling him again but his line was busy. She threw her phone on the floor.
“Lanre, so you want a fight? A fight it is then. I will fight to keep what’s mine, while you watch your back”. Ify said. Then she stomped her foot on the ground. “It is not my fault. You rejected him and then my aunt and his mother came into an agreement. It seems my aunt desperately wants you to be her daughter in-law. She made me believe I was protecting you from K and the hurtful taunts of his mother, but they all turn out to be sweet. K is caring and I like him already. I’m not stopping any marriage because you are my friend”. Ify said. She felt like she would go mad. Then she corrected herself using the past tense of the verb “are”. She realised she and Lanre are no longer friends. Lanre was her friend but not anymore.
……………………..
“Who was that?” Christian asked K. K showed him his phone. Christian saw it was Ify. “She must be missing you”. Christian said. K smacked his head.
“You are crazy! How is she?” K asked.
