Being A Fool

Christian looked away from K. He acted like K had not just talked to him. He brought out his phone from his pocket and started to take pictures of the scenic view in front of him.

“It’s not like this is the first time you are coming to this place. Tell me how she’s doing”. K said to Christian.

“She is a general pronoun. Who is this she you are asking me about?” Christian asked K. He wanted to get K to mention her name. It was as though K had swore an oath never to take Lanre’s name. He would always use She instead of her name.

“You know who I’m talking about Chris, do not try to make me repeat myself again”. K said. Christian scoffed. Then he told K that the person he so wanted to know how she was doing has a name and if he would not take her name in his mouth, then he could as well go ahead and forget about asking him anything about her.

K frowned. He wondered why Christian was trying to make things difficult for him. He did not want to call her name. He was literally trying to forget her name. According to him, it will help him not to go after her. He wouldn’t want his father to hurt her all because of his desires.

Christian laughed mockingly.

“Kehinde shey oya werey ni? (Are you mad?)”. Christian asked making gestures with his hand. “You can’t eat your cake and still have it in your hand Kehinde. You can’t be worried about her and still expect yourself to not want her. I keep telling you that you are in love but you de form playboy. Sorry o brother. Are you going to find out about how she’s doing yourself or not?” Christian asked.

“I dare not!” K said and walked away from Christian. He went straight into his car and drove off. Since Ify came, he has been giving her one excuse or the other. He was not that occupied with his work. He only has to supervise twice a week while the contracted supervisor supervises throughout the entire week except Sundays which is a day of rest for the builders.

So all these while, K was avoiding Ify. He did not want to see her. He was nice to her, but only when he was with her. But he could only be with her when his mother gets involved. He drove all the way from the hotel where he and Christian were down to Lanre’s shop. But she was not in her shop. His two hours drive had gone in vain. He had totally forgotten that it was a Sunday and she could not have been opened on a Sunday.

He felt tempted to call her. But he couldn’t. He just could not. “Is it my father’s threat or I’m just being a fool right now? I mean what’s issue with this Lanre of a girl sef? Why can’t she leave my head? Do I really love her as Chris had said?” K asked himself as he sat down in his car.
