Don't Try Too Hard

“Welcome to my abode!” Christian said to Lanre while he sank down on the couch. He looked pretty exhausted. But then it was because he has an injury and had lost a little blood.

“Should I help you disinfect the wound?” Lanre asked. Then she hits her hand on her head as though something had gone wrong.

“Do you even have first aid box?” Lanre asked. Christian told her he has first aid box. Then he stood up and went upstairs. Lanre was not sure if she should follow him or stay behind. But after sometime when she did not see him coming, she went upstairs to look for him.

Lanre found Christian in inside a room. She was sure it was his bedroom. And he did not seem to need any help since he was already applying first aid treatment to his wound.

“You seem to be doing pretty good with the cotton wool in your hand”. Lanre said. Christian told her he was cleaning the area. She offered to help him even though he was doing alright, it was her fault he got hurt. But Christian refused. He asked her to go and wait for him downstairs.

“I will join you once I’m done”. Christian said. Lanre did hesitate, she was feeling guilty seeing Christian tend to his wound by himself when it was her fault. She stood watching him wondering if she should just go ahead and help him.

“So have you come up with a plan?” Christian asked her. She looked at him confused, wondering what he meant, she asked him what plan it is he was talking about. Christian sighed.

“Don’t tell me you have washed it down with your mother’s amala, the thing we talked about concerning who Kehinde’s bride is going to be”. Christian said. Lanre made an “oh” and crossed her arms resting them beneath her bosom.

“Funny!” She muttered scoffing while lifting her eyes at the ceiling. She shook her head.

“I know I already said I will do it. But you are yet to send the advance payment to my account. First send the five million naira, then I will do as agreed”. Lanre said.

“Lanre!” Christian called. She looks at him expectant of what he would say.

“Don’t try too hard. If it is too much for you, let her win. There are so many men who would kill to be with you”. Christian said. Lanre scoffed.

“I never wanted to anyways. Just can’t help it after being humiliated”. Lanre said. Then she looks at Christian suspiciously. She asked him why he was paying her to get Kehinde if he didn’t want her to try too hard.

“I’m just telling you as a friend not to get too deep in the game. You may end up getting hurt”. Christian said.

“I thought Kehinde is the one who’s your friend?” Lanre asked Christian. He told her Kehinde is his friend but he is not the one competing with another girl to marry himself. Lanre told him she was not doing it because she wants to marry him. She only wanted to show Ify that she was not a loser and could still get Kehinde back if she wants.
