Biscuit And Wine

Christian stood up from the couch he was sitting on. Then he grabbed Lanre’s hand and pulled her along with him as he walked downstairs. Lanre asked him to let go of her hand because she was not a little kid that will miss her steps if he does not hold her hand.

“You are yet to apologise to me Lanre!” Christian said to her. She asked him if it was because he took the fall for her. He shook his head indicating it was not it. She made a poker face.

“Then what?” She asked. Christian told her that as a lady, she was not supposed to fight. There were certain things she must learn to let go and certain things she must look for a lenient way to handle. Lanre just nods her head as if she will take heed of his words.

“What did she do to Chidinma?” Christian asked for the first time since they left the plaza. Lanre told him what had happened.

“Chidinma had marks all over her back. That woman used wire to flog Chidinma on her back. I would have gone to see her the next day when those marks were still there swollen and red. But then I fell ill, if not, I would have put pepper in that woman’s eyes. She is wicked”. Lanre said. Christian puts his hand on her head.

“If you put in the energy you use to fight for orders in fighting for yourself, then no one can beat you in anything”. Christian said to Lanre. He made her sit at the dinning and left for the kitchen.

“Are you going to cook or what?” Lanre asked. Christian told her he didn’t need to cook. He was just going to grab some biscuits and one fine wine.

“Biscuit and wine? Ew!” Lanre said. Christian told her it was not bad eating that. She disagreed with him. She told him that cannot serve as lunch for her. Then she stood up and went into the kitchen.

“I thought you wanted to get us biscuits and wine?” Lanre said surprised to see Christian actually cooking. He smiled at her. He told her noodles was just another kind of biscuit that can be cooked. Then he focused his attention back on the tomato he was slicing.

“I prefer spaghetti to noodles and amala to eba”. Lanre said to Christian who just gave her a smile. Realising be has only been smiling she asked him what was making him happy.

I finally got to have lunch with you. Even though it didn’t go as planned, at least it worked. And I’m the one who cooked”. Christian said. Lanre thought he was weird saying it as though they already had lunch. Just then, they heard the doorbell ring. Lanre turned to go and answer it, but Christian told her to let it be. He will go open the door himself. So she remained in the kitchen while he went to attend to the door. He wondered who it was that was at his door.
