The Rumour

Lanre ended up having a bad mood after hearing her brother’s name. She heaved a sigh and left her office leaving her phone on the table. She got to the others and noticed one person was not with them.

“Where is the new girl?” Lanre asked. Everyone seemed not to know except Sharon.

“She said she wants to go and use POS outside”. Lanre raised a questioning eyebrow. Sharon shrugs indicating she had no clue why, but everyone does know what a POS service is for. Lanre asked everyone if they had lunch already. They told her they were yet to. Lanre asked Aaron to come with her. She gave him some money and asked him to get something for everyone.

“Go to Domino, get pizza for everyone. Then any other food they choose to eat. Make sure you buy drinks as well”. Lanre said.

“Don’t you think that will be spending too much? There’s already a lot on ground. I mean you are getting new equipment and you will still pay us at the end of the month, this is too much”. Aaron said airing out his view on Lanre’s decision to get them food.

“How do you cope for one month feeding on one salary? I think I should start giving you all weekly allowance. That will be better. And Aaron, please stop seeing me as your boss. Let’s act like co-workers”. Lanre said.

Aaron left Lanre’s office with the thought that Lanre was getting it wrong. “As long as the world exist and life must be sustained, and as long as man has the ability to reason differently, capitalism is irrevocable. Capitalism cannot be put aside. There will always be one person at the top of the class over another, be it the bourgeoisies or the proletariats. It cannot be overemphasized”.

Lanre opened her phone again after Aaron had left. She decided to chat Christian up since she was not sure if he was up for any phone calls. She sent him a message asking if he was busy. Christian immediately called her on phone after seeing her message.

“Lanre, what’s going on? You are everywhere on social media! I just happened to stumble upon it on Twitter this morning. It’s war on you right now Lanre and this image is not good if you are going to keep a position next to the Governor’s wife or even Kehinde”. Christian said to her.

“Headache!” Lanre grunted. She asked Christian to slow down and talk slowly. She could not comprehend all that he had just said to her over the phone.

“Lanre, I do not know if this is a rumour, but it says “UNN’s Mass communication best graduating student allegedly a prostitute”, and there’s more. This one is on Naija news! Lanre I’ve been working on ways to bring down this rumour, but it keeps spreading. Funny enough, I don’t even know what I’m fighting for”. Christian said sighing at the end. He was not sure if those rumours are true. He has not known her for long.
