Someone To Control

Lanre sat down at a table at the far end of the hall. She was not the only one there. There were so many people in the hall. The music was a nuisance to Lanre. But she has to be there. The Governor’s wife wanted her to be there. She felt alone. Christian told her he would be present, but he is not yet here. And the newly wedded couples already danced in. He must have planned coming late since he was not yet at the venue.

It’s Temitope’s wedding with Austin, it’s supposed to be a happy day for the family of the Adewales. But that happiness did not spread to everybody. Olasile was not happy but she had no other choice than to accept this marriage rather than allowing the shame that will come with her daughter getting married without their permission. Worst is that after Temitope’s wedding, they will have to go pay Ify’s bride price and welcome her officially to their family. K was yet to say anything to them, but he was not denying at all. He was not even against her when she called him to tell him they will be going to pay Ify’s bride price.

Olasile sighted her son. Since the wedding ceremony started, K has been everywhere but close to his family. Even when the family of the bride were matching in, she did not see her dear son. Even when she sights him elsewhere, before she gets to him, he was gone. This time she has to make sure she gets to him. Olasile kept following her son but stopped when she saw him standing next to Lanre. She was yet to discover if what Ify said was true, about her son having anything to do with Lanre. She watched as he pulled Lanre away with him.

“Why is he being rough with her?” Olasile muttered.

Meanwhile Ify had noticed K pulling Lanre with him. She stood up to leave but her aunt stopped her. Mrs. Okafor told her to sit down.

“Let them have their last moment, look, Olasile is watching them. She would sack Lanre and make sure she never gets to come close to her son”. Mrs. Okafor said. Olasile had invited her to her daughter’s wedding since she complained she was not invited to the engagement, one that was not even celebrated in the country. It was just Temitope and Austin who did the party.

“Are you still going to make her your daughter in-law?” Ify asked her aunt. The woman winked at her. Ify told her she did not understand what she meant by the wink. Mrs. Okafor told her she was no longer interested in Lanre and would not let her son marry a woman that does not even look his way.

“My son’s wife should love him more than he loves her. I realised Gozie likes her more than she likes him. And it bothers me. I was thinking of a woman I can control, not the one that will control my son and take him away from me completely”. Mrs. Okafor said.
