Christian first of all contacted the Governor to inform him about K’s condition and his whereabouts. After which he called Lanre asking her to stay calm and that everything was fine now. Confident that he has been able to assure her, he drove home. Got out of the car and went straight to meet Lanre. It turns at his assurance was not assuring enough. Lanre was pacing around the living room. She rushed to Christian asking if K was out of danger. Christian sighed. He was not expecting her to do this after telling her he was fine.
“Yes he is out of danger! And no, you are not going to see him in the hospital”. Christian said raising his voice a little at the end. Lanre noticed the anger from his facial expression. She decided not to ask any more questions. Christian went straight up to his room. He got in and shut the door. He kicked off his shoe in annoyance, removed his tie. He took off his clothes and walked inside the bathroom. He turned on the shower. He felt heavy in his head. Thoughts of how much he has been sacrificing for Lanre and yet she still cares more about K. It angered him she cared too much for K. From what has happened so far today, Lanre has won, but he doesn’t want that. He already told her even if she lose, he will pay her the remaining five million naira. That was what the Governor had promised. That was what he said he would do. But now he just want the Governor to stay out of it. He wants K to stay away from Lanre. But he can’t even fight K directly.
Instead of getting relaxed, Christian felt more burdened. He left the bathroom feeling more frustrated. He decided to dress up and live the house. He thought of ways to vent out his frustration. He thought of clubbing, but it didn’t seem to get to him. He decided to drop the thought. He could even start up the car and drive out. He breathed out heavily. He looked towards the house. Then he just relaxed in the car. He wouldn’t know how to talk to Lanre right now. Staying in the car will be better.
Meanwhile, Lanre had gone to meet Eno. She needed to talk to Eno. She had prayed her emotions doesn’t take over. So it took her a whole lot trying to suppress her emotions. And it also took her a lot of effort to make Eno talk. This was the first time Lanre got to hear Eno’s story. For the first time in her life she cried after hearing someone else’s story.
Lanre could not imagine how a man would kill his wife and run away with two of the children they had.
“Why didn’t you tell me all these before now? I would have done something to help”. Lanre said. She realised she was acting weak. She told Eno to find something to eat in the kitchen and rest for the time being.
