He Only Met Ify

When Christian left Lanre’s place, he didn’t go to work. Instead, he went to K’s place thinking he would see K there. He only met Ify. He asked Ify where he could find K but she just shrug without uttering any word out of her mouth. He clenched his fist. He was already impatient. He asked Ify yet again where he could find K. Ify looks at him.

“Since you came here to find your friend believing you will see him here, you can as well search the entire house. If he is not here, you can go on and search the whole of Nigeria for him. Just don’t ask me stupid question”. Ify said to Christian.

“Both of you were friends as well as roommates. Can you tell me what you know about her. I mean truths only”. Christian said to Ify. She asked him if he had come to find K or he actually was there for a more stupid thing.

“Does mentioning Lanre annoy you? How about your attitude? Don’t you think you should fix it? I heard you were nicer than her”. Christian said to Ify. Ify signed.

“It is not my fault that we ended up this way. I tried to talk Lanre into being friends. I told her I wasn’t going to push through with the wedding. I tried talking to her but after the engagement party, she totally ignored me. I later learnt from her mother that she was now in Lagos managing her own beauty parlour. I decided to go find her”. Ify said. She took a pause. She asked Christian to sit. She sat down as well.

“That day, I didn’t get to meet with her. The teenager there was rude to me. I would chat Lanre up on WhatsApp, but she would ignore my chat after reading it. Most times she would leave them unread. It was annoying. You will never know how it feels when your best friend starts pushing you away. I felt hurt. I wanted her to be the chief bridesmaid. I didn’t know how to escape the wedding, but I was willing to let Lanre marry if she wanted. Perhaps we would have switch roles on the day of the wedding. My father wouldn’t have accepted K’s money for my bride price anyway. He was against the relationship”. Ify said taking a break yet again.

Then when she continued, she told Christian how she had gone to see Lanre again but Lanre asked her to leave chasing her out of her shop. And when she asked Lanre if it was because she was jealous, Lanre decided to create a scene making her look like a villain and accusing her of having pushed her down. I was not even the one that told victory to say those shit about her in the class group chat. I only told victory these things when trying to confide in her because I was scared of losing Lanre. We had been best friends for four years”. Ify said.
