The Nicest Little Creature

Ify looked at Lanre with teary eyes. Lanre asked her to send the video of her mother being maltreated to her new phone. Ify did as told. Once she was done, Lanre forwarded the video. Ify asked her who she had it sent to. Lanre scoffed. She told Ify that she had forgotten to advise her aunt that her brother was in the navy. Ify told her that she doubts her aunt would have put that into consideration as she could use her influence to remove her brother from the navy. Lanre laughed.

“It is too late Ify. I forgive you your ignorance. But your stupidity, I can’t”. Lanre said. Ify flared up. She asked Lanre what gave her the audacity to call her stupid.

“What makes you think that you were right in the first place?” Ify said.

“I never tried to hurt you. Even when I did something, it was not just because I wanted K to leave you. It was because his mother deserved it. The two of you were covering up her mess. Someone had to get it out to the world”. Lanre said. Ify asked her about her aunt who she framed for pushing drugs if she also deserved it.

Lanre chuckled. She asked Ify if she knew her aunt very well. Ify was silent.

“If your aunt could make my brother lose his job just because he could not make me marry her son, and also hurt my innocent mother, then do you think your aunt is the nicest little creature on earth?” Lanre asked Ify. Ify could not respond to the question. Instead she told Lanre that she should just go plead before her aunty and her mother would be released.

“Jean Jacque Rousseau, “Man is born free, but everywhere is in chains”. The only way for man to be free from those chains is to fight and not to beg. Ify, I do not beg for my right. And especially not someone who does not deserve my kindness”. Lanre said to Ify.

Just then Ify’s phone rang. She looked at it and ignored the call. Lanre’s eyes were focused on Ify’s fingers. She asked Ify if she was going to keep ignoring her calls. Ify stood up and told Lanre she has completed her act of kindness and would be leaving. Lanre didn’t say anything. She didn’t even look up anymore at Ify as she left her office.

Lanre was rather relieved that Ify was gone. She immediately puts a call through to her brother. She has to discuss with him before Christian arrives. She wants her brother to take care of her mother’s part, while she looks for a way to seek justice for Ebube. She wants to go to the Lagos state morgue and claim his body. She would need to first go to his house so she can get to contact his family as well.

“Did you see the video I sent you?” Lanre asked. She didn’t bother with the formalities of greeting him as her elder brother before she went straight into talking about the video.
