An Invitation

“Hey!” Eno turned to see who had just tapped her on her shoulder. Before her was a male figure. His face was not strange to her. He was after all her class mate. The same boy who the principal had sent to bring her to his office the day she had an issue with one of her class teacher. And for a second there, Eno was about asking him if he was dumb because he was yet to say anything to her after calling her attention.

“Uhm! I’m your class mate, remember?” He said to Eno.

“As if I don’t know! Does he think I have a short memory or what?” Eno said in her head. She smiled at him. She just nods her head. She would have said those words to him, but she did not want to be caught being mean or rude.

“I’m Isaac Ademola! Can you please remind me of your name? I’m mostly absent minded when it comes to people, so I kinda forgot your name”. The young boy said to Eno.

Eno shrieked inwardly. She wondered why he was asking for her name. As far as she is concerned, she does not wish to get popular. It was good he forgot her name. But on a second thought, Eno felt Isaac himself was not popular among the students. So there was no big deal telling him her name. Besides, he was her class mate.

“Enowa Itohan. In case you forget, always remember Eno! If you forget this as well, I won’t tell you shit again”. Eno said to Isaac. He laughed. Then he brought out something from his bag. He gave it to Eno. It was a card.

“My parents will be celebrating my birthday this weekend. They told me to invite my friends if I don’t want the adults to take over my party. The thing is, I don’t even know if I have friends. And I am not willing to let in some crazy old folks to my party”. He said taking a pause. He used this opportunity to study Eno’s body language and her facial expression. He could barely read her.

“Will you be able to make it? The address is on the card”. Isaac said to Eno. Eno told him she would ask her guardian first. And only then will she be able to give him an answer. Isaac thanked her and walked away. Just then the bell rang. Lunch time was over. Lanre frowned. With the card in her hand, she went back to class.

For the rest of the day spent in class, Eno noticed that Isaac was not in class. She tried not to wonder where he went. She remembered that that day at the principal’s office, he had said he would rather read at home than listen to the teachers feeling their explanation was not satisfactory. But still, she thought he had too much pride for a student. She wonders how his test results always looks like. Could it be like a hundred and fifty over hundred?
