She Does Not Need A Psychiatrist

K wanted to ask her to go ahead with the question. But seeing the hesitant look in her face. He decided not to. He just kept on massaging her scalp softly, digging his fingers into her hair. She smiled as it was soothing to her. She felt like peace had just whispered a song to her.

Just as she was about to close her eyes, the doctor walked in. K frowned.

“Next time knock before coming in”. K said. He stood up from the chair he was seated and watched as the doctor checked Lanre’s vitals. Then he checked her eyes. K looked away for a moment. That was his problem, he would not want another person this close to Lanre even if it was a doctor. But they needed the doctor.

Soon the doctor began to ask Lanre questions. She had to tell him everything that happened. According to her, in her head she has been believing that they were still in the month of June. She told him her birthday was in July and she could not even recall getting to celebrate it. He asked her if there was anything peculiar to her that occurred in the month of June that has made her hold unto the month refusing to leave that month.

“I don’t know anymore. I’m just here right now, I don’t know anything”. Lanre said. The doctor asked her if her memories in the month of June were extremely happy ones she would not want to leave. Or they were sad ones and had gotten her trapped in it.

“Are you trying to say I’m mentally unstable? Probably depressed, yet do not know? Or that I’ve been living in the shadows?” Lanre asked. The doctor didn’t say anything to her. He just turned to K and told him they would need to discuss in his office.

“Kehinde, I need water”. Lanre said. He told the doctor he will join him outside. He gave Lanre water to drink.

“Please do not hide anything from me. Do you get?” Lanre said to him. He promised her he won’t keep any secrets from her. She smiled. She drank the water. After which he left to go meet with the doctor.

On getting to the doctor’s office, K was offered a seat. He told the doctor to tell him what’s up. And to not leave anything uncovered.

“We are yet to determine the actual cause of happened to your wife”. The doctor said to K. It was exactly how he had introduced himself, “Lanre’s husband”.

“We will need to study her condition for sometime first. She would also need to visit a psychiatrist”. The doctor said.

K scoffed. He asked the doctor if he was crazy by trying to suggest his wife could be losing her mind.

“She does not need a psychiatrist. And I’m sure you do not know what is wrong with her. I will be discharging her”. K said taking his leave. The doctor sighed. Humans are always in self denial, or denial of reality.
