Chapter one hundred and seventy
Xander wasn't expecting that Davis would come to the company, especially since he'd been trying to reach him to no avail. He hadn't even been expecting his call at all. He'd thought that the caller was Anna's kidnapper.
"Where have you been, man? I called and texted you severally." Davis looked sullen, dark circles formed around his eyes and his skin colour didn't hide them, they were quite noticeable.
"I've not been good, man. I've been far from good, to say the least." The last thing Xander wanted to hear was stories, particularly one from Davis. He had too much to deal with right now, he wasn't interested in hearing about him and Kathryn's couple fight. Before Davis could go further, he immediately blurted out.
"Anna's missing. She's been missing since yesterday, and there's been no trace of her since then. All my attempts to find her have gone down the pan."
Davis expressed total shock at the information. He'd wanted to tell Xander about what happened with Kathryn and him, he wasn't expecting that something like this would happen. He noticed that he didn't find Anna on her desk when he came also. Usually, she's try to stop him or engage him, and there was no way he would enter Xander's office without reaching her office first.
"How did this happen? Where was she? Who was she with? Who could have done this?" Davis couldn't control himself. He found himself asking a lot of questions simultaneously.
"I got a call from Max some days back too, and trust me, it wasn't good at all. I can't help but think that he might have something to do with Anna's disappearance. He mentioned that he had a surprise for me. I-" Xander trailed off and he ran his hands along his curly hair. He hung his head downward, facing his desk, where he placed his palms.
Davis was definitely not expecting to hear that from Xander. He slumped on the chair and swallowed hard, his expression blank. It wasn't until after a few moments that he looked back at Xander who was facing him now.
"Max as in Maxwell Williams, your brother?" Davis had to ask again to be sure that his ears weren't playing tricks on him. Xander's expression was deadly serious. He knew that he couldn't be joking, he wasn't the type to. If he'd ever joke about anything or anyone, Davis knew that it couldn't have been Maxwell Williams.
"Max is deadlier than I remember, Davis." Xander heaved a deep sigh which certainly was not one of relief.
"I can't seem to get my mind off the fact that it could be Max. He's darn good. The fact that there is no trace of Anna makes me think that it has to be him."
"Let's assume that Max did this. I'm not saying that he did it, but let's just say that he did. Why would he want to do that? I mean, why kidnap Anna? I don't see any reason why he would want to."
"He probably thinks that he can get me through her." Xander's brow furrowed, and lines of worry formed around his forehead.
"Well, that's if he knows her. Besides, we both know that's untrue."
"What if he does? What if he knows Anna?"
"How is that even possible? The last time I checked, he hadn't been in the city in a while."
"Well, maybe he doesn't have to be physically present to know what has been going on. He just might have ears here and there. We never can tell." Xander said, shrugging.
"Wait. Let me get this right. You think that he might have planted some people here?" Davis asked in surprise, still trying to make sense of what Xander was saying.
"Well, I know that he's capable of doing that much and even more. He's Maxwell Williams."
"Shit, man! This is some really deep shit." Davis didn't know what else to say.
"But what if it's not Max? Do you know anyone at all who might want to hurt Anna? Anyone like that?" Davis asked, running his hand along his stubble.
Xander shook his head in reply. She's not the type that caused any trouble. She's very easygoing. In fact, too easygoing- the easy target for bad guys. Xander thought.
"Are you sure, man? Think harder. No one has ever tried to hurt her?" Davis asked again, just to be sure that Xander thought it through well. Xander's brow knotted as he thought hard about Davis' question. He was about to answer that there was no one, when he suddenly remembered that someone had tried to hurt her before now, but failed at it.
"Oh no! There is one person," Xander said and his eyes widened in surprise at the realisation. How come he never thought of this at all? What if it was the same person that tried to hurt her?
