"What are you talking about ma Nana?" I asked strenuously, my breath wheezing. "Why would you even think that I could ever get pregnant for your boss? You of all people should know that that would never happen." I cried.
"We sense that wench Aggela is trying to get pregnant for Anax. God help me, I been cursing so much since that Aggela came around. Every time she is here!" Ma Nana said, pausing briefly to look pitiful. Then she continued. "She has been trying for a while now, we know. And now that you are here, we think she may try even harder, knowing that you are competition. And the gods forbid that she should get pregnant. You are Anax wife. You should get have his child." She explained.
"Are we seriously having this conversation right now?" I asked in disbelief, looking around the room as if I was expecting to get the answer from someone else.
"Yes." Ma Nana replied simply, and her gaze showed how serious she really was.
I still couldn't believe that I was actually having that conversation with the old lady. Of all conversations to have, I never imagined that a day would come when we would talk about this, especially as I knew that she was well informed of my situation.
I set my spoon down, put the tray of meal aside, slowly rose to my feet and began to pace, sighing every now and then. Ma Nana remained seated on the bed, watching my every move. I paused at a point, then I walked back to Ma Nana. Looking her straight in the eyes, I asked her.
"Are you serious right now, Ma Nana? Tell me you are joking. Tell me if you're just pulling my feet to get me out of my mood." I begged.
"I am not joking. I mean this mi kallos." Ma Nana said, her eyes still looked very serious.
"Well that's wild!" I groaned, flailing my hands in exasperation. "I mean, even if Ma Dimitra does not know about anything, you know about everything! You know what I really am here, and you know why. You know that I am a prisoner. Why would you even come up with such a crazy idea? And if Ma Dimitra came up with it, why would you sit there and agree to it, knowing all that you know?" I asked. "Does your boss even want a child? Has he ever mentioned it to you that he dreams of being a father? Does he seem like a father material to you? Cause he doesn't seem so to me, with the way he treats Kaiti!"
"Well, the truth is Anax has no plans of having a child. Ever." Ma Nana said, and I stared at her with wide unbelieving eyes.
"What?" I scoffed. I think I was more amazed by the fact that she was answering me with all confidence, as if she didn't know how crazy ridiculous she sounded in that moment. "Jordan doesn't want kids, but you want me to get pregnant for him?" I asked, smiling wildly, because I was in fact loosing my mind.
"Yes." Ma Nana answered simply again, as if she expected me to understand.
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Ma Nana stared at me in confusion. I laughed even harder when I saw her confusion. Then I suddenly stopped laughing.
"Do you mind explaining to me how you think that miracle would happen?" I asked her seriously.
"We think you can make him change his mind. Or at least, Dimitra does." Ma Nana said.
I waited patiently for her to continue talking, but she wasn't making any attempt to say anything else.
"I still can't make any sense." I shrugged, prompting her to continue.
"Anax is strong headed and his resolve is final. He doesn't want his own family, but we think he deserves one. Dimitra doesn't like you a lot, but after what happened between you two because of Kaiti, she thinks we have a chance with you. She says you are stubborn, and if you send your mind to it, you can win Anax over." Ma Nana explained.
I sighed and scoffed severally in succession.
"Does Ma Dimitra know about my situation? Does she know what you know?" I asked gently.
"I never told her what I heard. But the old woman has lived a very long life, and her sixth sense is super active. There is no way she hasn't got it figured out." Ma Nana said.
"But you never mentioned it to her." I asked.
"No." Ma Nana replied.
"Then let's say she was holed up in the kitchen all these while, and her super active sixth sense didn't get the chance to figure it out. So technically, she has no idea what's going on. And now, she stands before you, coming up with this ridiculous idea. And you knowing all you actually know, stood there, accepting this wild idea, so much that you even bring it to me. It never crossed your mind to educate her of my fate when she was cooking up this wild shit?" I cried hysterical.
"Calm down omorfi." Ma Nana urged.
"No, I can't calm down ma Nana. There's no way I can." I said.
"If you knew Dimitra like I do, you'll understand why I accepted her idea." Ma Nana said.
"I don't have to know her. I know Jordan, and I know I can never have his child." I said.
"If Dimitra thinks there's a chance, there is a chance. If she thinks you can win Anax, you can win." Ma Nana said.
"Well, does Ma Dimitra know that my beloved husband whom I have a chance with is hosting his mistress while I'm still here? Did she notice that he rushed back from his important journey to be with her?" I asked.
"Omorfi, Anax did not invite that wench. She came on her own, like always. And he didn't rush back to be with her. She is a business partner too, remember. They probably have important business, and that's why he came back." Ma Nana said.
I gave a dry laugh.
"Ma Nana, you can carry on believing your friend and her sixth sense. As for me, I'm going to gently remain a prisoner and captive here for the duration of my sentence. I have no plans of extending my stay here. And especially, not to have a child. Find your boss another woman to make that dream happen." I said. "Even if there was a chance, I don't want to." I added, grinding my teeth.
