He stopped and raised a brow, but I could tell he wasn't really listening. He was too busy plotting in his mind, working out a way to make sure his plan was successful. But I needed him to listen, to give me his undivided attention, so I took his face into my hands.
"The prince will not side with you, no matter what arguments you make. He may not like this anymore than the rest of us, but he feels this is the right thing to do, and he won't go against his father. Not about this." I gave a hard shake of my head.
Jax covered my hands with his, then slowly lowered them from his face. He kissed each of my palms. "I will not lose you, Piper. I don't care what it takes."
"I can't lose you, either, Jax, but if you go through with this plan, you will die. Then what am I supposed to do?" Tears pooled in my eyes.
His shoulders slumped, and he rested his forehead against mine, eyes closed. His breath was warm and steady and safe, indicative of everything I've ever wanted in my life.
