A split second later, Dee returned with our drinks. She pulled a notepad and pen from the front of her apron. "Have you decided what you'd like to eat?" Of course, she looked to Jax first, and then at me, as if I were nothing more than an inconvenience. An afterthought. If she only knew who and what I was. . .

"I'll have the Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream," I said.

Dee nodded. "Good choice. Would you like a side of bacon with that? Or sausage?"

"No, thank you. But I will take a glass of chocolate milk."

"Of course." She turned her attention to Jax, and I swore she stuck out her chest for his benefit. "And for you?"

I snarled under my breath, and Jax nudged my leg under the table. "I'll have the same, please."

"You got it." Dee tucked her notepad back into her apron. "I'll get this right out for you. Is there anything else I can get you?"

"Yeah, actually there is." Jax draped one arm over the back of his chair, the picture of ease.
