We head back inside the packhouse and back to my office. Melanie and Jax slump onto my couch; I sit at my desk, and Jayden paces back and forth in front of it. No one says anything for a while, and the air is thick with worry and frustration. “Why?” I hear in the room so quietly that I would have missed it altogether if I weren’t a she-wolf.
“Why what?”
“Why wouldn’t you let me fight for you?” Jax says with his elbows on his knees and his head down.
“Do you think I’m not capable of fighting for myself?” Jax sighs and leans back on the couch. He says nothing and hangs his head backward. Melanie looks from him to me and back again. Jayden continues to pace. “Answer me! Do you think that I’m not capable of fighting for myself?” I continue to watch Jax and wait for his response. Jax brings his head back and slowly gets off the couch. He walks to my desk, places his hands on top, and leans towards me.
