What are we?

Lynn drove the car to the city near the place where the two stood earlier, but something was a bit different. In the car wasn't silence. Lynn and Dexter talked about different topics and random things. Dexter was really happy that something changed and that he was able to speak more freely to Lynn.

Suddenly, Dexter's face fell as he thought of a question. "Lynn, after these days, will I still need to go to... You know...?"

Lynn looked at him with an encouraging look. He smiled. "Don't worry about that. Just trust me. Paul and I know what we are doing."

Dexter smiled back when he heard the confidence in Lynn's voice. "Okay!" he answered with a happy voice. He trusted Lynn and he believed he will help him get out of this.

Dexter turned his head to the car's window and looked outside at the road and at the people that were just walking past them. He was smiling.

"Where do we go?" Dexter asked curiously.

"To a restaurant I used to go to. It is nice if you ask me." he explained as his heart and soul were focused on driving.

"Did you go there alone or...?" Dexter hesitated to finish the sentence. Why did he feel jealous at the thought that Lynn might've had another partner?

"Sometimes alone, sometimes I brought here the people I tried to hook up with. Like, the bridge and then the restaurant. It is a good choice for a first date." he smirked as he took a peek at Dexter.

"Our first date should've been the one where you invited me to the restaurant for dinner. But you decided to fuck it." Dexter complained.

"I'm sorry for that." he chuckled.

Dexter zoned out at the road, deeply thinking. Lynn turned his head as he slowly pressed the brake pedal with his foot at the traffic lights.

"What is it? What are you thinking of?" Lynn asked curiously as he raised an eyebrow and tilted his head slightly. His hand was holding the steering wheel tight as his veins were completely visible and his other hand slowly went on Dexter's leg as he asked the question.

Dexter got scared like someone had just woken him up. He looked at Lynn and saw his concerned look. He then stuttered.

"Uh... I... I'm sorry... W-what did you say?" he blushed when he realized where Lynn's hand was.

"What happened? You seemed like you were on another planet rather than Earth. Are you all right?"

"Oh... Yeah... I was just thinking... What are we?" Dexter bit his lip as he thought of that again.

Lynn raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean 'What are we'? In which way?"

"I mean... In general... We hang out like this, but we sometimes don't even talk to each other. We make out because we want, but sometimes we don't even approach. I don't understand. It also feels like we're more than friends, but sometimes I feel we're strangers." he looked at his feet while he spoke.

Lynn's gaze softened and he was confused. He didn't know what to answer to that, even though he knew exactly what he felt about Dexter. His mouth just wasn't able to confess his feelings.

"So what are we?" Dexter asked again as his sweet and loving eyes were looking at Lynn driving.

"I... I truly don't know how to answer that..." he lied, even though he knew.

"See? Not even you know what we are. Then who else?" he spoke, his tone a bit disappointed.

Lynn started to feel bad when he saw Dexter's expression. Lynn arrived at the restaurant and parked the car, but before getting out, he placed his hand on Dexter's leg once again. He smiled as his voice was calming and relaxing.

"I also think we might be something that's called 'more than friends'. If we weren't more than that, then we wouldn't kiss without a problem." he shrugged.

This gave Dexter a bit of hope. He smiled back and replied "Maybe you're right. Thanks for making me understand."

Lynn placed his hand on Dexter's face and leaned forward to kiss him. When he pulled back, he caressed Dexter's cheek with his thumb and then he said softly "I think we should get down."

Dexter chuckled. "Yeah..." he smiled softly and looked with love at Lynn.

After one of the most beautiful evenings spent by Dexter, in which he and Lynn had a wonderful dinner and had fun as none of them had expected, upon returning Dexter felt too tired to keep his eyes open. Lynn and Dexter got in the car and Dexter put on his seatbelt yawning.

Lynn chuckled as he reeved the engine of the car and put on his seatbelt too. "Seems like someone is tired."

He yawned again. "I am. I had a good time though." he smiled and then rested his head on the window.

"You can rest. We still have an hour on the road until we arrive home." he said, sounding more annoyed.

"All right." he murmured and then closed his eyes. He was tired.

In no time, Dexter woke up seeing Lynn's house in front of his eyes. On the way, Lynn threw Dexter some glances to see if he was okay, and everything he saw was a cute sleeping face and a very happy smile.

When they arrived, Lynn turned to Dexter and shook his shoulder gently. "Dexy, we're home. Get your head off the window for a bit."

"Uh? Oh... Ok..." it's all he said before he saw Lynn getting out of the car and coming to Dexter's side. He opened the door and took Dexter in his arms and carried him into the house.

Lynn immediately went into his bedroom and gently placed Dexter's small body on the bed as he covered him with the blanket.

"Dexy? Don't you want to change?" Lynn asked, but then he noticed that Dexter was already sleeping like a baby again. He sighed, smiled, and turned to go to smoke a cigarette.

He got out on the terrace and got out his packet of cigarettes when he felt something brushing against his leg. It was the cat he always fed. He leaned down and petted him a few times before he got back on his feet and lit up his cigarette. The night was relaxing and Lynn could see perfectly the stars in the sky, all the constellations, and even the full moon. It was silence and all he could hear was the sounds of a random car passing by his house and the cat purring. He smiled as he took a smoke from his cigarette. He was happy, for the first time in... 12 years. He was truly happy.

Lynn looked down at the cat that was looking up at him with sweet and deep eyes. Lynn chuckled.

"I guess you're hungry." he sighed and left the cigarette in the ashtray on the terrace and went back into the house to search for some food.

He came back with some milk and a piece of meat. He let them in the corner so the cat could silently go and eat. He crossed his arms as he looked at the cat eating.

"Hm, Dexy was right. You need a name. We can't call you 'cat', can we?"

He went back and leaned with his elbows on the edge of the terrace as he continued to smoke his cigarette. Suddenly, he heard someone calling his name.

"Lynn?"
