"I get it, David. I do. I'm not… I don't want to make this worse for you. But I also don't want you to accidentally fall into one of his traps. He's been working on you since before I got here. You said yourself, he knew your father—"

"Don't." David stiffened and his voice was cold with warning.

I took a deep breath. "David, we have to look at all of this the way it really is. We can't… we can't flinch."
