54 When in Rome

William opened his eyes when a young stewardess gently tapped his shoulder and placed a meal on his table.

He coughed and sat up, feeling slightly embarrassed.

Lina and Julie had already begun eating and the shining sun welcomed them through the small airplane window.

The stewardess smiled attractively and placed a linen napkin on William's lap and asked, "Tea or coffee sir?"

He smiled back and replied, "Coffee thanks."

The young woman nodded,"Yes sir," and leaned over to pat the napkin again, supposedly fixing it.

Lina watched as she sipped her coffee and he was aware of her tight eyes judging him.

Will smiled and straightened up, nervously fixing his hair.

"Thanks," he said removing the woman's hand. She bowed and walked away to serve the next passenger.

He tasted the black coffee and turned to face Lina who quickly turned her head to look out of the window.

"Look Julie," she said leaning over and touching the glass, "We're close... that distant land mass is Italy."
